I'm taking my 14 year old son on a road trip to dig for gems and minerals. I was debating about whether or not to bring the detector along. I will have my bottle digging tools with me!

Thanks

i cant tell you about detecting but i have been to all the places you have named and i like spruce pine the best if you can get up with some of the guys from MAGMA to take you to a spot up there to dig your own emeralds you will enjoy that better than buying buckets of dirt.the place i've been is called crabtree mine its dig your own. and it was fum. emerald hollow was nice to good luck i hope your has a good time.

We used to go up there, gosh... like 40+ years ago and hunt the old mines. I walked into a field across from a campground at Spruce Pine and picked up a really nice and large specimine of blue bladed kyanite. I still have it It is pie shaped about 8" long x 4" at the wide end. We found lots of nice stuff there. Surely the miners dropped all kinds of stuff.

Of course back then you could climb into the pits and put yoursself in danger without the nanny state trying to protect you.

If you want to collect great minerals and crystals take a trip up to Bancroft, Ontario. It is similar to the Spruce Pine area but more so.
