Anyone Hunting North Wales??

bdahunter

New member
I'm taking a trip this April to North Wales by Bardsley Island and Pwllhelln. Wanted to know if anyone hunts this area and can give pointers on the local conditions? I'm expecting things to be just a little different than the conditions in Bermuda.

Cheers,

BDA:cool:

Haven't detected there but in my pre-detecting days I spent four years living in North Yorkshire. Pretty much every year there were people lost to the rising tides on the coasts from Cardiff to Wales to Scotland. The farther north the more dramatic the tides are. Watch the tides closely if you get out on a broad beach area or into the water. The tides rise and fall like nothing you have seen in Bermuda. But you travel a fair amount so you probably know that.
Cheers!

The tides are very mild in Bermuda compared to Wales so I'll be careful, especially considering that the waters are so much colder. The wetsuit will be coming in my luggage, that's for sure. I'm really interested in getting into the water over there as I don't think those areas are being hit as hard as the farmer's fields.

Cheers,

BDA

i live a few miles north.(liverpool).
my local beaches have deep mud between high and low tide marks.plus they are all red flag beaches,no swimming.
also the tidal range can get silly lol.8 miles up the coast from me at southport the tide goes out for 4 MILES.
the beaches here just don't see high numbers of people, our summers have been really bad for the last few years so numbers at the beaches are bad too.
best to go after a good storm and try to find some old stuff.plenty of gold sovereigns come up after such storms.blackpool beach is good in such conditions.
hope that helps.

shaun.

here is a tide chart for north wales area

Thanks for the Great Info, Shaun. I've contacted the metal detecting club in Mold, Wales and asked to attend their monthly meeting on April 17th. I hope to work the beaches around Bardsley Island and Pywylln, lots of possibilites for old artifacts and golds I hope.:bouncy:

Maybe I'll see you at the meeting in Mold,

I just realized that the tides are measured there in meters which means the average variance of 7 meters is a variance of around 24 feet. Yeah, I'd say that's a big tide.:surprised::surprised:

I knew there were big waves because of the surfers that flock to the area but I had no idea that the tides would be so HUGE!

I'll be careful,:look:

There is only a few inches difference between meters and yard. So if its 4 meters does it matter if it's 4 yards or 4 yards 9 inches. Hope your hunt goes well. Please post pics of the country and beaches plus your finds. Us snow bound hunter crave this stuff.

Hey BDA - I am a South Wallian and can give you plenty of beach locations in South Wales. Why dont you try a bit of inland searching though and go home hopefully with some Roman or Medieval silver rather than beach losses? Have a look at www.DetectingWales.com and ask the same question - someone will give you an answer.

Actually, that extra 3.3 inches per metre adds up to feet pretty quickly. With the tides in the area of Wales I'll be staying being a little over 7 metres it translates into a difference of around 3 extra feet. Either way it is a lot of ocean bottom to try and cover without getting caught by the change of tide.

Hello Neil:

I'll do a little dirt fishing at my friends' property but otherwise it will be in the water, which will include streams and ponds. My gear is water oriented - Excal, Surf PI DF, plus the old ACE250 so I'm bettter set up for working the wet stuff. I'll probably take the PI and the ACE with me. There may still be good finds to be had at the beach; isn't that where you found that Beautiful Emerald Ring?? One of the Nicest Finds I've Ever Seen!!:clap::thumbup:
Please feel to stop by if you're in the neighbourhood.

Cheers,

hi i live in n.wales not far from mold,i have a static caravan on the coast here,we have tides to 33foot ,as far as i know noone searches in the water around here, its only sensible to search at low tide in the water and its not low tide for very long.15,20 years ago it was ok on the beaches around here ,but there are too many people searching in the summer on the dry sand so there is not much left in the winter.if you are lucky + catch a beach just right you may do ok,if you like 9 carat gold ,because thats what we have here.i go to spain a lot and if you want to call to visit when you are over + ask me where to go thats ok.i don,t go searching on the coast now in the winter ,too cold ,only 9ct gold and you are lucky to find your fuel money.good luck alun

I'll be in The Llangollen area for a week from April 17th onwards. It's always great to hunt with a fellow hunter who knows the area.(I've taken several hunters around Bermuda when they are visiting the island and it is always good fun) Thank you for the offer of your advice. Do you attend the meetings in Mold? I haven't had a response back yet and was curious to know if they are still holding meetings on the 2nd Friday of the month.

hi llangollen is about 8 miles from me over the mountain,i know you are going on the canal[spoke to a friend brian who you emailed]the club meeting may not be that date because of easter.i don,t go to beaches in this country anymore[only in the summer] so even though i would like to take you i never go out of season but if you want to get in touch + i will tell you where i think you may get lucky.i always go to spain + you are welcome to come to my place + see some of my finds.i have a sov g.t.,excal,+ a s,master p.i.

Cheers BDA. I found that on a beach in South Wales when I first started. 22ct with a large emerald. I rarely get to go on the beaches as I focus in land looking for Medieval and Roman finds, but if the truth be told I have had some nice beach finds and should go on them more often. Enjoy your trip and post what you find in Wales. Try and visit Snowdonia if you get the chance or travel a little bit longer and make it to the Roman ampitheatre and barracks at Caerleon - Newport or add another hour to the journey and head to Stonehenge. So much choice for you. Enjoy it.

This is the ring in question. Top right hand corner.
