I went to the Doc today for my follow up due to all my back surgeries. He wrote me a perscription to a pain killer I have never taken. Get this he prescibed this medicine called Actiq (Fentanll) 90 doses was almost 2 thousand dollars! That is outragious. Has anyone here ever heard of such? This thing looks like a lolly pop and you take it as if it were a sucker. I think I was the only sucker though, But out of all my years in and out of the doctors office I have never got a prescription that cost that much. I could buy corrective surgery for my eyes for that price and now I have to take this on a monthly basis, Thats a house payment and then some. Anyway just wondering if anyone has ever taken this medication and if you had success with it? let me know Thanks Ronnie

Ronnie,
Try looking up some data on your pain medicine before using it. Some of these pain killers are addictive or worse yet might have dangerous side effects. Ask yourself if you have a good wholesome diet (don't smoke or consume large quantities of alcohol) and get your eight to ten hours of sleep per day. Just be careful what some of these so-called doctors prescribe....Al

I did and its a sad choice I have to make. Either you have to deal with the chronic pain or get strung out on the opiates. They call it HillBilly Herion. Its bad, I know my body is physcally addicted to them I have been on them for a long time now. I have tried to comeo off them and end up in the er with severe pain. The Doc wants to intall a pain pump direct into my spine. You get a bag and needle that goes direct into your spine and it dispenses morphine on a timed basis. The doc has been trying to raise my meds for months, but due to the fear of being more dependant on these I have always told him no, and I was scared. I always end up in the ER not being able to walk or in bad bad pain. Its really messed up. I get all types of other treatments for pain management, I excercise, massage, hot packs, cold packs, yoga, positive thinking, those Needles from the orient? whats it called? I have explored everything. My back has Three long steel rods, 6 screws going direct into my verterbrate, then cages with stem cells inside between the verterbrates. I am losing the use of my left leg due to all the nerve damage and my toes on my right side. I do not know what else to do. Thanks for your advise. I do appreciate it. Take care Ronnie

and I know this may sound weird but seriously, email Rush Limbaugh and explain your situation, the meds you've been on, this new proposed one, and your mental disposition about pain management. He's been through all this and he may just be able to add some insight that you've not been made aware of. As for what I could prescribe... well, I'd say romp around with that girl friend of yours as much as your able and at least there should be some momentary lapses of the pain! <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D"> Best Wishes and HH

if you use some of what you posted the other day I know it would take my pain away!!!

Thats what got me into this mess, too much of that. LOl Thanks

Thanks HH from what research I did this medication is used for pepople how have built up a tolerence to other pain killers. I have been on Percocet and Oxycontin for quite some time now and the tolerance has gotten higher for me. Sort of like drinking the longer you drink the more you can drink. Same with these type meds. If somone that has never taken Oxycontin 40 and one of the Actqi lolly pops it could kill them, but I have been on them so long that I can take them and get some pain relief. The bridge I am going to have to cross that worries me is when and if my pain get s no better what type of pain medication can i take? I build a tolerance to this as I have to the others. These things really do not kill pain, they just make you feel good so you do not care about the pain, the pain is always there, but your state of mind altered and in my opinion thats why they are so addictive. You want to feel that good all the time. The depression from the pain, the lack of enjoyment of life, etc etc. I hate them, but I need them. I hate being dependent on anything. There are even televison commercials on that want you to call this and that Lawyer if you have been on Oxycontin for a certian amount of time. they want you to sue the makers of the drug. Im sure I will have hell to pay when the day comes if I ever get off of them. I know what Rush went through. I do not drink, smoke or anything. Now the Doctors have me depdent on Opiates. IF I do not take them I can walk, if I do Im dependent. Lots of pepole on Web Md will tell you that there is a difference in being a addict and dependent. I do not see the difference the withdrawls are the same for either of us. I guess the only difference this way is legal? Thats a penny for you thoughts. Take care and Thank you all for your responses.

'The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook' by Clair Davies.
It's awsome.

I would check it out first ( for side effects, if you are allergic to it, or if it reacts with anything else you take ) and also for cheaper alternatives. Drug companies heavily push their latest, highest priced drugs, and cross the palms of your friendly doc to push them ( even though there are cheaper alternatives or generics available ). It's common practice but unknown to most citizens. Last year the average amount doled out to the docs in this country by the drug giants was $13,000. Many received more in gratuities.
The pharmacy is on this same bandwagon. Pills they charge you dollars apiece for they get wholesale for pennies. It's a grand racket.

I take vicodin daily for my back injury and I think it costs Workmens Comp about $100 a month. Ask about that or oxycontin. Think the old boy buried it in you about a yard.

Well I see you've been on oxycontin. I was too for a short time but morphine doesn't work well on me. Give me a shot and it wears off in 15 minutes. Have you tried a Tens ( spelling ) unit. I know several people that wear one and it works wonders and shuts the pain right off. Check with your doc on this one.
Percocets have been around forever and I knew a gal who took over 25 per day and my brother-in-law took a fistful of oxycontins daily.
Tell you another alternative - bee sting therapy. My wife takes them for severe MS but they work for pain, arthritis, and a host of other problems. Many thousands of folks in this country use this therapy with remarkable results. Doctors used bee venom many years ago before the drug companies started running their lives. If you're interested I can send you some info or steer you to it.

I feel for you bud. I've been putting up with chronic back pain for 13 years. Most of the time I can get around okay but if I do something stupid and make it mad it will put me down for the count for a few days. Hope you get it resolved and you might want to try the bee stings. Your doc knows about it but probably won't tell you. Just like there's been a diet available ( developed by Johns Hopkins University ) for 70 years that cures epilepsy. Every doctor in the country knows about it but won't tell their patients afflicted with this problem because there is no money in it for them or the drug companies. Our medical system is a sick, greedy, travesty.

Hi Ronnie,I've had problems in the past with my back and here's whats helped me.Do some good stretching exercises in the morning.Yoga is excellent if you are able.If I get back pain one thing that helps is an Inversion Machine I bought at the flea market for ten bucks.Strap your feet in and hang upside down.Pulls the vertebra apart and stretches your back.Just ten minutes a day reverses the effects of gravity on your body.Fentanyl is a high powered pain reliever that's 100 times stronger than morphine. The story goes about 20 years ago an underground chemist trying to make synthetic heroin made Fentanyl and started selling it on the street for heroin. It was so powerful it was killing addicts by the hundreds. The police busted the dude and the drug companies got a hold of the formula.True story.I know I'm an operating room nurse.Fentanyl is the drug of choice in the OR for pain relief.Quick acting but short lived.
