Haven't been out much lately but this nice weather sure has a pull on me to hunt lol....found this in the woods down the hill from a grave yard. looks like some kind of button but i'm not sure...found it right with this 1927 buffalo. the button says ( united states of america 1906 ).....looks like it could have been a pin or cuffling maybe....I'm sure someone knows, thanks bob.

From what I can see it looks like a punch coin that was used for Jewelery, some pins and some bigger coins necklaces. These were made with a actual coin and the face was punched out of that coin. These were pat. back in around Nov 1909 I believe my Lincoln penny and the V nickle I have found says on the back. Like I say I feel this is what you have from what I can tell of the picture. Here is the 2 I have found years ago.

wonder why people would do that. Obviously, it would have to be 'of more value' to them like this than the monetary value of the coin...and back then they didn't get $10 or $20 an hour. So that coin had much more value in terms of labor/monetary value than just the face value.

Thanks for sharing the pics. Cool finds.

Bob I found one several years ago at a school in Greenfield. Is that close to where you got that one ?Mine has a pin attached on the back. ben ohio

These were used for Jewelry back then and there must have been a company that had a idea to do this as there is a pat. date on them and not done by individuals.
Back in the 70s I remember a article in one of the treasure magazine about these is how I found out what they were. Most of all the dates on the coins I have seen are 1909 and wonder how many are on 1909 IH pennies with the S mint mark, or the 1909 S VBD Wheaties?? The Barber Quarters and the Barber half were the necklaces shown in the magazine.
I will say what ever they used to do punch these coins left the face very detailed.

Hi Ben, I found mine here in chillicothe. although yours is probably the same but the pin on mine is gone. I don't think it started out as an indian head penny...do you get out and hunt much Ben...shoot me an email I found my oldest coin there in greenfield....spark2@roadrunner.com

Hi Rick, when I look at mine it doesn't look like it was made from an Indian head penny this one has full set of head feathers and a penny doesn't, but it has the pin hardware on the back but the pin itself is missing ... very cool anyway thanks for the info rick.

Is there anything on the back of it?? That will tell if it is a punch coin or not as it will look like a coin on the back like my pictures do. Also if you look at my V Nickle you will see that the punch is different than the liberty on the coin, but it is a liberty the same as the Lincoln penny as it is a Lincoln.
Either way it is a great find that is different.
