Anyone ever find a Tall mans lower rod that will fit Tesoro coils?

Sven

I'm all for saving weight, to make Tesoros even lighter.
It can be done by eliminating the middle rod and using a tall man's lower rod. It does shave off about 6 oz.

I have done this with a White's s-handle set-up and it works really nice.

Question is what detector brand tall man's lower rod will fit the Tesoros search coil?

Sven, when you done the 1st mod was that using the ultra long bottom rod and doing totally away with the middle section ??? must admit saving 6oz in weight is rather appealing.

That's correct. Since there's only one hole in the Tesoro s-handle and the longer lower rod can only be inserted a short ways. The lower rod will have to be cut to the desired length to fit the owner.

i understand about saving weight. but, 6 ounces does not seem like a big deal. i could see saving a pound. i read on here that someone does not use a scruff guard on the coil because of it's weight. gee may as well take off the knobs and the decals and make a small wedge to hold the battery in so you don't need the cover. peel out the foam in the arm cup and remove the hand grip. may save a few more ounces there too. haha. just saying there sven, is the 6 ounces that big a problem for you?

Not a big problem for me but, on a heavy machine 6 oz does make a difference.

In the case of a PI machine the further away you can get the search coil from any metal the better off you are.
That's why I do it.

In the case of a Tesoro, I have an older umax that has both a gold middle rod and a gold lower rod. The new plastic tall man's rod would replace
both middle and lower.

By the way, a Tesoro umax with a 5.75 or 7" coil with a tall man's rod make it feel as if its a feather. Umax detectors, still are a bit coil heavy using the 8" or 9x8's.
A tall man's rod will balance the machine out nicely as well.

Some older folks with bad wrists or elbows (me), or the ladies can benefit with a 6 oz reduction of weight and with better balance, who would otherwise have to limit the amount of hunting time
before pain sets in.

If your young and strong, old and strong, or have no joint issues, 6 oz weight reduction doesn't mean squat.

We are not trying to save weight to get the detector airborne what you suggest jokingly would be a waste of time and energy to say the least.

By the way, my 3 pound PI feels like it weighs less than a Tesoro umax and balances perfectly and you can swing it all day.

I ordered some Bounty Hunter Tall Man's lower rods.
Clevis width will fit between Tesoro coil ears.

Sven, how long are those BH rods,i have seen some Whites ones at 32'' long have 2 of those on order for my Crossbow pulse,so may try and see if they fit a Tesoro coil as well.

BH are 26", 20mm wide clevis end
White's are 15mm wide.

I ordered a couple of Whites myself and a couple of s-handles for my PI's

The BH are just long enough to eliminate the Tesoro ctr rod at least for me.

The BH tall mans lower rods work perfect. And is the perfect length if your 6' tall.
You just have to trim the end a bit shorter with the spring clip. Then it will slide back into the s-handle further so the spring clip will lock into the s-handle hole.
This eliminates using the lower metal and middle metal rod sections on my Bandido II umax.
The Bandido is now super light using the 8" brown donut coil.
To give you a better idea what I mean, attach a small 5.75 coil to your umax detector if you have one. That's how light it feels.

Only drawback is a umax machine is no longer compact-able as a 3 pc for backpacking. If you don't backpack, then it doesn't matter.

Sven, have used this tallman method on 3 of my detector after reading this thread, and it certainly does make a massive differance. Will be ordering some more tallman rods today, they are on special offer over here in the UK,so will take full advantage of it.Also used them as you have suggested on my Pulse machine,as its on a straight shaft its like a poor mans version of a carbon fibre straight shaft.

The only thing that i was originally worried about was a slight whip or flexing of the rod as it is so long, but that is not the case even when using a large coil on the Pulse.

First off took the Bounty Hunter rod, added two rubber washers from a White's lower rod, they fit perfect. Redrilled the Tesoro coil for BH's 1/4" coil bolt.

Re-drilled a new spring clip hole after adjusting lower shaft with coil in place for my detecting height.

Very nice set-up
