Anyone ever break the yoke on their coil?

Tuco

New member
I broke the yoke on my 7.5 KHZ CC coil yesterday. I bought some nylon washers and managed to fix it for the time being.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and their fix for it?

Thanks in advance.

Regards Tuco

If you do a search of this forum, you'll read several reports of it over the past year or so. Most of the folks have sent them to Minelab for replacement. Some have tried to use an epoxy to mend them theirselves. I'd opt for the replacement route if it were mine. HH Randy

I would also opt for a replacement. I wouldn't want to be out in the middle of the desert and have it break again. Good Luck.

Do Minelab sell spares like the plastic wingnuts, washers etc ?

I see them getting dropped in some long grass one day and being nylon......:(

You can get them from your Minelab dealer, or at a local hardware store. e.g. Lowes, Home Depot, Menards, Ace, True Value, etc.

Yes I broke my stock CC's ears also. I fixed it with about 1/8" thick acrylic(like plexiglass) board => traced, both drilled & cut out, sand the areas to be glued(roughed up), and glued on the coils ear area with Loctite Super Glue.

Hi David,

I bought some nylon washers and just cut them in half (half moon shape) and used that same Loctite glue you used. Man does that glue ever hold plastic! Took my coil out today and banged it around quite a bit and it held up super.
Regards, Tuco

Great Tuco! Mine is still holding also. I used Loctite Super Glue in Gel form. I think it is better than the regular type because it does not run as easily.

I also cut a half moon shape for the broken-off top like you did, then also put another second piece on the outside covering the whole area from the coil to the very top to secure it. I wish I could take a picture and show you.

Yes the glue held, but try to sand(paper) the areas ahead of time before gluing. Yes Loctite Super Glue is very good but look at these. You can "Google" these glue names one at at time to find out more: Miracle Glue, The Last Glue, Lightning Bond, Pasco Fix, or Turbobond Powerglue(in Australia).

They are all about the same glue, they do work very well, and I think all of them are made in Germany and a bit better than Super Glue or Krazy Glue. They all contain a highly distilled alpha cyanoacrylate ester and some is medical grade for sealing skin instead of using stitches. Very good for metal, rubber, most plastics, etc. As industrial Grade German Super Adhesive. If you've ever heard about "German Super Glue" this is the original German-made adhesive.

I used black plastic buttons, that had only one tiny hole in the middle. I just drilled it out to fit the detector's nylon screw. I glued the button to the coil with Marine grade epoxy mixed with graphite to darken the epoxy so that is blends in with the black plastic . It holds up and looks really good. Note, before adding anything to the coil, I scan the materials (epoxy, graphite, button) with the coil it self and see if the Xterra picks it up. No problems.
