Anyone epoxied their coils

Sand Scoop

New member
I haven't done the coil but did do the cover. It put a little back bone in it.Now not as flimsy as before.I thought Minelab had OK'ed epoxy on the coils but thought I'd throw it out here to find out how many have done it on the CTX

My coil cover snaps on pretty good. But sand and dirt does get in so I'm going to use a suggestion I read someone posted here and run a bead of RTX silicone gasket maker compound around all edges to seal it yet be able to remove it if I want to.

I just take it off, I have never damaged a coil without one. It would take a lifetime to wear through one the way the ML coils are built.

I was wondering about that myself. My area has different levels of mineralization. The other day I decided to look at the bottom of my coil cover to see if it was scratched. When I turned the detector over a lot of dirt fell out of the coil cover.
When I took the cover off I noticed a lot of open spaces in the coil. I was wondering if it would void the warranty if I filled those spaces. The reason being: If I detected in a heavily mineralized area and the dirt collected in between the coil and the cover, wouldnt it effect the ground balance if I detected in another area with less mineralization? Another solution would be to put some tape over the holes!! Im sure the reason for the holes was to make the coil lighter (makes sense to me) My coil cover is really loose.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated....Im switching over from my Explorer SE and so far I really like the detector.

Dirt will still get in the cover whether you tape the holes on the coil or not. You will either have to take the cover off once in a while to clean it or just leave the cover off. I take the coil covers off, I have no use for them. In an afterthought about sealing the cover on the coil.......... it seems that would trap air in the cavities of the coil and make it more buoyant if you were a water hunter.

I have been using a Dow-Corning silicone rubber sealant to keep sand and dirt out of the coil cover. It works great for water hunting with an Excalibur coil as well Ex 11 and Etrac coils. It comes in clear or black and it can be removed very easily. Johnnymac

Thanks for your suggestion Larry. I'll have to give it some thought. I have coil covers on all my Explorer coils and they only need to be cleaned every 6 months or so. I have only had this detector out for about 3 hours and there was about 1/8 of a cup of dirt in there.
Its not a big deal...I probably just have a bad cover. Maybe I will contact Minelab and see what they say. I'm really liking the CTX and these minor issues dont bother me.

On another note: Didnt I buy my first Explorer ll from you about 7 or 8 years ago? That was a really good one and my first introduction to Minelab detectors!!!

Have a great day
