Anyone else prefer TTF to multi tone?

I've found that for the sites I hunt that I prefer to use goes forever TTF settings over multi tone unless the site is very clean of iron. For me it is a lot easier to distinguish between 2 tones then just check the VDI numbers to decide whether to dig or not and I feel I do get a lot more coins close to iron using this setting.

Just my preference, but I like multi-conduct. Then if I have a really deep iffy signal I'll switch to my TTF program to confirm if its non ferrous.

I have found myself lately hunting only with TTF. I use the Bill S trashy park pattern and have been
doing very well with it, especially with the older nickels. When the detector sounds off with a high tone
I dig the signal regardless of the numbers. Works for me!!

I tried it this weekend for a little bit. It is different and something I will have to keep playing with. Hopefully I will be able to get used to it and learn a little more about using it to sniff out a few in the old parks round here.

I may be wrong but I would think using a trashy park program would defeat the purpose of TTF. My understanding of using TTF is to open the screen up to avoid the machine nulling while it is discriminating.

I prefer conductive, but switch to TTF whenever I get into enough iron to potentially mask something.

To me, hunting in conductive is like hunting on auto-pilot because I don't have to visually decipher every high tone.

I find myself swapping a lot depending on conditions.

I should have added in my quote that the areas I've been hunting lately are very trashy and full of
rusty nails. This is one useful technique for recovering the goodies in the trash.

I use both methods, as both ways have their benefits.....you learn to use the one that works best according to the area you are hunting. No ONE way is best for all areas

Hey AJ, Robertj298 is correct. Try opening the bottom half of the trashy park screen (all of it) while leaving the top half as is (to disc out most non ferrous trash). Now deliberatley look for the nails then SLOW down and see if you can get a high tone. If so dig. This method cannot work if you disc out the nails.
Happy Hunting.

I like to do old houses and lately the houses have been so full of nails that in conductive, it nulls constantly, so I switch to TTF and run with a wide open screen (no discrimination), or you can use the minelab relic program with just discriminates out iron in the bottom right corner of the screen. Listen closely for high tones between the grunts, and if I like the numbers, I dig. I don't dig all high tones because foil will ring up high, so when I get numbers like 10/4, I don't dig. Did a house last week built in 1910. Did it first in conductive and got ten wheats between my son and myself. Went back the next day and redid it with TTF and my son found 24 wheats, 2 silvers, and 3 indians. Almost all the signals had iron nails in the holes with the coins. It made a believer out of me when it comes to TTF.

Thanks for the advice guys!! It looks as though I've been doing the TTF all wrong. Hey, even a blind
squirrel will find a few nuts now and then

As long as the site is older and it's not loaded with a lot of newer junk metal like pop tops and can slaw I run in 2TF almost all the time.
I've used 2TF for the last three years - for well over 1000 hrs. - approx. 95% of the time - for me - it really seems to make the good targets stand out more.
The down side of 2TF is that you have to spend more time looking at your target ID numbers rather than hunting the changing scale of Multi-Tones by ear.
But, I've gotten so use to hunting in 2TF that I can usually tell a good solid - quick on and off - deeper hit with by ear before I even look at the screen.
Using 2TF or Multi-Tones is up to the individual - and will vary from site to site - the bottom line is ... in any mode your E-Trac will find the good ones !
