Anyone else having trouble with 5x10 covers?

I finally took my 5x10 elliptical out of the package to use yesterday, and the coil cover will not stay on. It is almost like it is too large for the coil. John at Kelly Co. said it is a common complaint, and they are sending out a new one. This happened to anyone else?

Based on the Eureka coil of the same size, it does not have a ridge to hold a cover on securely. That is another good reason to run a bead of silicon around the edge of the cover, once attached. (in addition to improving the resistance to moisture). HH Randy

Also you can use sticky tape around the outside edge to hold on the coil cover(skid plate) on as well. I was told by Chris Gholson of Arizona Outback that you can simply test any tape by running your metal detector coil over it(I suppose in Prospecting Mode with no iron mask or Coin & Jew. Mode in all metal and no negative #'s come up). If there is no signal. then it is safe to use.

Yes Silicone (or Lexel) caulking is the best like Randy said but I was told to use white Latex exterior paintable caulking instead because it is easier to remove off the coil and cover than Silicone.

If you want the very best, get this, but just try to get it off later!!!

I put a couple of aprox.1 inch strips of double face tape on the bottom of the coil to hold the cover on. It is easily removed for cleaning and removing moisture then put on a couple more ( 1 would probably hold, or even Velcro) pieces and ready to go again.

Never thought of that, excellent idea! Velcro that is sticky on one side, stuck to the bottom of the coil and another strip on the underside of the coil cover and they hold together then!

Randy said his bother uses "pick-up box liner spray" or solution, that is good for coating the bottom of the coils from wear and is also lightweight.

I just put the cover on and run some black electrical tape around it and it's done. Seals out dirt and stuff and you can't hardly see it.

As you can see above, most of us run a strip of black electrical tape around the circumference of the coil and cover to keep them together. This prevents iron impregnated dust from entering the gap between the skid plate and the coil base but it also keep the cover from falling off... especially if you split it some how. Though unlikely, if you were to split it, you'll ruin a good day's hunting if it starts falling off.

I've noticed most of these covers tend to be slightly loose. It's never been a problem though since mine is always securely taped in place.

You can see the tape clearly on my coil in this picture (see link) : CLICK THIS LINK

Cheers,

Marco

I've had may 5x10 elliptical since last April and have not had it fall off once. Maybe a bad lot?

I just ran one line of black electrician's tape around it to cover the space where the cover meets the coil. It's been on ever since.
