Anyone else had this problem?

Was out hunting today and after about an hour every time I put the detector on the ground, it turned itself off. It wasn't falling over, I was putting it down gently. Thought it may have been battery compartment problem at first. Then I started doing some tests. Held the detector up parallel to the ground (same position as when it's sitting on the ground), and it did not turn itself off. Laid it on the ground and it turned itself off again. Then I started doing soem testing with the coil...think I isolated the problem to where the wire goes into the coil...the coil is the 9" 7.5kHz concentric, and this is the first time I have used it for a long time (been using the 10x5 and 6" conc) I suspect that in lying the detector on the ground the coil moves, thus bending the wire at or near the connecting point...I usually dont have the wingnut real tight so that I can adjust the rake of the coil easily, and it is possible that this is the root of the problem. Just wonding if anyone else has had same or similar problem...the detector hadn't been turning itself off with the other two coils, but I have used the 9" more than the other two. Sapper.

I had that problem with a new Xterra 50 I bought once.--It would shut itself off occasionally (even while I was hunting).--Then it would run fine for quite a while & about the time I would think it was OK-it would do it again.---I ended up sending it into Minelab & they took care of the problem.--Seems like they said it was in the switch (I'm not sure about that though) but I know it wasn't in the coil.---I've heard of a couple of other guys haveing that problem as well-but that was in the earlier Xterras.---I thought Minelab had "whipped" that by now.---A guy hates to send it in if it's just doing it once in awhile but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.-------Del

it turned out to be some cheap batteries that had some little points on the contacts. The slightest bump would shut it down. Try replacing the batteries with a different brand before you send it in. HH, Mike

Thanks guys, I did have the same problem some time ago and thought it had something to do with the battery compartment, so I stretched the springs a little and the problem seemed to go away.. After I put up the post on the forum, I got the xt 70 out and started fiddling with the coil.... the damn thing wouldn't turn off..so it is possible that you are right Mike and D@P-OR, I'll check out the battery compartment again and see what happens. Thought that perhaps I was onto something with the coil thing, but it could be the battery thing again, even though I've been very careful how I put the batteries in etc. Thanks for your help, Sapper.
