Anyone detecting at Plum Island, Mass.?

mmbs

New member
Hi,
We're brand spanking new to detecting. We live in Mass. and my son is very eager to give our Classic III Plus a try. I was wondering if anyone in the forum detects at Plum Island. It seems like it would be a good place to fool around this time of year, deserted and the ground isn't frozen. Any tips or suggestions?
Thanks,
Michael

Hi Michael,

I did do a search for Plum Island and found that detectors are definitely prohibited in the "Parker River National Wildlife Refuge"

http://www.fws.gov/northeast/parkerriver/information/refuge.html

Seeing that it is a large island (with a long history) I'm sure there could be plenty of areas that people could use their detectors at.

I grew up on the South Shore and growing up I visited most of the Boston Harbor islands many times and just about all of them had seen human activity since the mid 1600's. You can check their histories and even get maps here:

Good luck!

Ken

Thanks Ken-
I checked the refuge rules too, what a shame, six miles of beach... When I was a teenager I found an 1856 penny just lying on top of the sand there.
There is a town beach before the refuge starts, maybe we could try there. We live in Acton and the North Shore is the closest beach area for us. I'm wondering how you find out if detecting is allowed, do you call the various Town Depts.?

Hi Michael. Well IMO if it's public property and there's no sign declaring that detectors are prohibited then it's ok.
I'm wary of anything labelled as historic or private property. So that means a lot is off limits to me out here by Worcester. But if you have doubts or questions you could always inquire with the Public Works Dept or Town Hall.

Good luck!

Ken,
Thanks. Growing up in the Concord area, everything is historic. I'm also trying to come up with some local areas we can try when the ground is a bit more friendly. I'm not too interested in finding change kids lost at the swingset, it just doesn't capture the imagination. I'll have to get over my reluctance to go up to a farmer's door and ask for permission to detect in their fields/woods.
