Anybody wore through their coil cover on the Excal yet? How long does it take?..........

I purchased the Excal 1000 in Jan. of this year and absolutely splintered the coil cover by June. Reordered a new 1 from Chuck and while it was on order, rubbed through the coil. Installed the new coil cover and it has rubbed through on the last hunt. Have thought about putting the epoxy on the bottom, but I'll rub that crap off in 2 hunts. Got 2 on order from Chuck and when I get down to using the last 1, I'll reorder from him. Guess I'm just hard on equipment. Responses welcome. GH

It's going to depend on what you are rubbing the coil on.

Scrubbing with the coil is going to eat it up pretty fast on sand and rocks. You already figured that out.

I dirt hunt, and float the coil just off the ground in bare areas, and just brush the grass in seeded areas. A coil cover lasts almost forever this way and there is no resistance to coil motion.

If you can train yourself to keep the coil just a little off the sand then it will last much longer and be easier on the rod without all the extra resistance from dragging the coil.

I like the rods on my Sovs adjusted so that the coil is just in front of my feet and just off the ground. This gives me a short sweep, but I almost have to try to hit the ground this way. The detector does not feel as heavy, as I don't have to be constantly lifting on it......much less tiring. Also controling coil movement is much easier.

Gulf Hunter you are using the Excalibur like a PI unit. You don't have to scrub the ground with the Excalibur to find lost items. Gently glide it across the sand and it shouldn't eat up the cover that fast.

I don't see that happening for me. I hunt deep water and the only way I know to keep my coil level, is low and slow on the bottom. It's just how I do it and it wears stuff out, but it works real good! Guess I'll just buy coil covers. Got a standing order of 2 with Chuck. When I install the last 1, I'll reorder. GH
