ANYBODY USING Golden uMax in VA?

Woodchuck

New member
Was looking at a Golden uMax, to use here in VA, but was told stay away from it,due to fact that I had a Deleon that did poorly here.Any Golden uMax users here using on in VA or in similar soil using one okay?

Don't have the uMax, but do have it's older brother the Golden Sabre. It also has a preset ground balance, and for the most part, works well everywhere. There are however, a few areas in Manassas, Richmond, and South Central Virginia, where my other machines did considerably better because I was able to adjust GB. BUT. .. .most of these sites were camp sites or battlefield areas without a lot of trash, and I'm digging everything that hits with discriminator minimally set, or All Metal. When I use the Golden in park areas athletic fields, it does just fine. . . ..in some cases excels. ...and because many of those areas do have a lot of trash, the notch becomes a handy filter to reduce at least the pull tabs strewn over the area.

The ED-120 discriminate, narrow or wide notch, and now multiple tone id's on the newer uMax, are significant improvements over the older versions. If you're primarily a coin shooter and hunt a lot of potentially high trash areas, this might be the ticket. . ..ground balance or otherwise.

Hope that helps - HH

If you send Tesoro your detector with some of your dirt or clay from your area they will tune your unit to it. Makes a huge difference on detectors with preset GB.

LOL I JUST LOVE THAT MYTH send in a sample of dirt!!!! When I had a brand new Tesoro Deleon that was not performing well here. I sent it in to Tesoro to look at with a sample of dirt.THEY DO NOT ADJUST YOUR DETECTOR WITH IT!!!!!. They said it is NOT representative of your ground conditions you would encounter. And your detector would NOT be set correctly. This is from the MAN himself Rusty Henry. The detector checked out fine at factory, but do to soil conditions here, they recommended me getting a detector with ground balance capability... They were honest enough to tell me this in letter they sent back to me along with Deleon. So as for the clup of dirt sample :rofl::rofl::crazy::laugh::blowup:

Well sir I beg to differ. I recently had this discussion with Robert (aka allcav) @ Tesoro. They will adjust your detector to a soil sample. Also what do you think ground balancing does? I do it on my Cibola from the trimmer because we have red clay here. Works great. And finally why does Tesoro suggest sending a detector in when you change coils? Is it not to tune the coil to the detector?

Actually, If the unit has a factory preset ground rejection and you change the stock coil, we do need to re-ground balance it! We call it tuning your coil to the machine.

Ok I put the dirt question to Allcav (not to get off subject) but heres rest of story Quote

Somethings wrong here, I had a Tesoro Deleon that was brand new,and sent it to you guys thinking something was wrong with it. It was okayed by you guys and I was tolded it was working exceptionally well when tested. And I was also told that you do not use dirt method to tune a detector to your ground. So why the mixed signals on the dirt sample?

Answer from Allcav Quote

" I am sorry for the confussion. I will explain it better for you. Even if you live on the west side of the US, it wont matter if you send in a dirt sample because of the highly mineralized ground here. The display is unstable in those conditions. There are certain areas in Goergia that have red clay. This doesn't effect the display like highly mineralized area in the west. It is a ground balance issue. We can ground balance the machine to the red clay."

So there you have it just the facts :argue:LOL
