Anybody Tweak The Internal Tone POT On Your Sovereign Higher Or Lower & How Do You Like It?

I remember a while back there was a bit of a buzz about the "Dixie" mod where the internal tone adjustment POT was tweaked for a higher (or some lower) pitch. Some said they seemed to be able to hear say silver at depth a tad better with a higher pitch adjustment of the POT. My ears had been trained so well on my QXTs to a higher silver pitch that I almost played with that POT, but over time I've found the slightly lower pitch of silver on the GT is just as alerting to me now that my ears have been trained to watch for it. Still, I'm thinking again I might go in there and adjust that POT to a higher pitch and see how I like it. I can wave a coin past the coil with my GT open until I adjust it right where my ears want it to be. If I mark the factory position well on the POT there shouldn't be any issues with re-sale value or setting it back to normal if I don't care for what I did in the field.

Anybody considering doing this...Be warned it will void your warranty opening your machine up. And be warned that I think (from memory) there is more than one POT control on the board, so be sure you are messing with the right one. Don't move that POT until you mark it's factory position well, or you know you'll be sorry at some point or time, like trying to re-sell to somebody who only wants factory tone settings. Also, if you adjust the POT all the tones move up or down accordingly, so nickles and such are going to change in pitch too. That reason alone is what bugs me the most and makes me want to leave things be, because nickels on this machine have a very unique tone to them that just stands right out among trash. If I raised the pitch and now they sound like tabs I'll have to re-train my brain all over again, and learn the new higher pitch of tabs, and of coins, and that slightly "extra sweet" pitch of silver.

Hmmmm.....(thinking)...(lightbulb)...(smiling)...What about an external tone control POT on the face plate, marked at factory setting, along with a few other markings for various "modes". Adjust it to "nickel" mode and now nickles have a high pitch. Etc....Naaa...Don't want to muck with removing a surface mounted POT control on the board. That can get dicey...Cool idea though I think...

Unless you have a extra GT control box just laying around to mess up i would leave the Pot adjustment alone it is hard enough to learn the factory set tones why would anyone want to make a whole new set of tones ? . I know a guy who tryed it and he rejects it now all the targets sound the same tone !!! and he cant get it back to factory spec,s . and cause he messed it up he voided his warranty , if it ain't broke don't fix it . Good advice Jim. We have those adjustments on the Explorer..... frankly i like the higher tones on silver, but .... on the beach i crank it back a bit to change those lower tones. It would be interesting to play with on smaller gold. Id be more impressed if they would give us a machine to not only adjust the tones but the volume on each. Id love to be able to turn down not off some of the worthless tones out there on the beach.

Now that is a unique and very good sounding idea...Being able to turn down individual conductivity tones so that, while they are still present to hear, don't bang you in the head with loud blasts like a machine gun. For instances, setting the tab range of numbers to a lower volume when you are hunting a site that has millions of shallow ones all over the place. I'd even go so far as to be able to FLIP the volume of targets. Make the shallow tab signals sound soft, and make the deep ones sound loud. Then you could tame down all the blasts from the shallow ones and concentrate on any you hear that sound loud, now meaning that they are the deep ones you want to dig well beyond the depth of when tabs were invented, and so they could be say a gold ring or some other good find.

I like your idea a lot and think my added one would also be of benefit in some situations. I think that would be something to consider in a unique new detector.

Hey, I remember I think Garrett (?) had surface target elimination ability, to where you wouldn't even hear the shallow stuff and only the deep. It was either them or Bounty Hunter that had that on a machine a while back. I wouldn't want the targets silenced, but flipping the volume from deep to loud and from shallow to soft would be useful to me some times. Same deal with your idea of setting certain conductive ranges to sound soft.
