Anybody recognize this button?

Found this yesterday, real shallow on the local sledding hill. The hill is not natural...it is manmade and is was built with all sorts of trash, so no telling where this might have come from. I found what looks to be an identical one (except in MUCH nicer sape) on the internet but it gave no indication as to it's purpose or vintage. It looks military, but that dosen't necessarily make it so. Anybody recognixze it?

Look like the Great Seal button From 1902----- General Service button I think they still use it today Jim CVA

My wife found one just like that last month. Through the use of google and the information on the back I found that is was made by "City Button Works - New York" This company was in business from the late 1800's until 1923. An Interesting side note to that. In the same area I found another much smaller button with the great seal on it but a much smaller version. That one was made by Waterbury which is the company that bought out City Button works and they made buttons into the 1950's.

A very long winded way of saying to check the back for any writing and google it and it may make the find a lot more interesting once you find out more about it.

Excellent advice Jerry, but there is no trace of the back left. Thanks for the info...without a hallmark I was having a real problem trying to track it down. I've found pictrues of it but no hint as to purpose or age. hmmm.. up to 1923 huh? Well someone did say they thought it was WW I vintage. Thanks again for tor the help. Happy hunting.
