Hello all,

Also posted this on the explorer forum. Found it last time out detecting at an old farmsite. Appears to be copper or brass.

I believe you found a signal cannon. Used to let harbor master know your ship is coming into port. Was it found near the ocean?

It's slightly bigger than a quarter!!!!!!!!

it is pretty small. Signal cannons don't have to be very big to make a loud pop. The don't shoot projectiles. Also known as a thundermug

You might wish to look here at the bottom

no idea-possibly some sort of tool handle as stated - but I definitely don't thing its a signal cannon cause once it was fired it would fly off and be lost as there is no way to mount it.plus its way too small.it's a keeper what ever it is

In my post above at the link shown you will see at the very bottom of the images of signalling cannons a couple of old small ones that look similar to your item.

My shot in the dark guess would be that it looks like it might be a bird/ animal caller.

may be a long shot but could it be an old incense burner. the small hole to draw air in so it lasts longer? or something to that effect.
