anybody know how to tune this?

I bought this last year or whenever and hardly used it.
It came with hand written instructions but they couldn't tell me about the switch in the upper right hand corner.
What is the M----A for
A for all metal? One day I had it tuned right by mistake and it was really deep but forgot what I did.
It has the ten turn pot etc etc.
what you see on the face is dust and grime and can be wiped off as it has been sitting on the outside porch for months.-no battery inside.

The "M" is for the manual ground balance. You put it on M and then balance the detector using the black knob.

The "A" is for automatic (read preset) ground balance. You put it on A and don't do any ground balance activities.

Looks like a nice mod job.

One position of the switch should be pinpoint or all metal, the other position should be discriminate.
Set the switch to get a low, steady tone by adjusting the thresh, then adjust the 10 turn while pumping the coil up and down to get a steady tone.
Switch it back, and you should be ready to hunt in discriminate mode.

are you talking about the switch underneath the handle? I think what I did today was place the swich on the face plate to M which I thought was manual and then the switch underneath I pulled towards me and adjusted the threshold to barely audible and pumped it up and down turning the pot until the tone was even on the upstroke and downstroke and then let the switch go back to center. This is good but it is not what I did earlier in the year as it was very very deep. should have written it down.
I think he said backwoods had instructions or new how to do it but I never bothered him.it is excellent but I don't remember what I did. so I think I will let it go.
thanks anyway.

Couldn't see the other switch. In that case, it looks like you have it right.
Monte has a power balancing procedure that will squeeze a little more depth than standard balancing.

You can probably download the original manual from Tesoro's website as a PDF file. At least you will know what they recommended before the mod and then learn it as it is now knowing what the "proper" settings where before.

I saw that same exact detector that Backwoods had awhile back. That M & A is confusing and was confusing to me back then. If you want to do a manual ground balance just put the switch on "M". It should be a 3 way switch under the grip. One position should be for pinpointing. One position should be for the discrimination mode. One position should be for the all metal mode. Just play around it until you figure out which one is the all metal mode and switch to it. Then follow these instructions.
