Anybody here ever waterprook an Ace 250???

Remove the control head. remove the coil plug from the wire, remove the headphone plug from your headphones. now drill holes in the water proof box just large enough for both wires to pass through. reinstall the plugs to the headphone and coil wires. silicone inside and out of both wires. set up detector and close the lid. let the box float or attach it to the rod with heavy rubber bands or what ever. start searching. here is a link to a water proof box that would work. But do a search on boxes (enclosures) to find all other brands.

instead of silicone around the wires you could use these.

At least one fella I know puts it in double sealed plastic bags and hangs it from his neck/chest with a camera bag. Then he reaches in the bag and presses the PP when needed. If you work with your ACE long enough, you wont need the PP at all!

He claims it takes a dunking this way and remains dry.

I've been researching a little since my initial post. I read on the Garrett forum where Bill is attempting to reset the pinpoint to the rod, near the grip, as a trigger-type deal.

Now if I can find a waterproof trigger switch I could solve the problem of pinpoint and still have the protection of a hard, waterproof box, as well.

Thanks for responding and for the great idea.

I just typed in "waterproof toggle switch" in a search and found many that would work. I added a toggle on my Ace 250 posted here on the mods but it's not waterproof.

...in all of this, it strikes me as equally (if not more) effective to get an instrument designed for water use. By the time you get a detector, cut, chop and experiment along with whatever other rigamarole comes along... well a basic Aquanaut or Tesoro would do just as nicely and can be had for fair money on the used market.

Plus, you are then dealing with a purpose built item and not some compromise.

I modified a 150 and found that you really don't need a pinpoint. The Aces respond and recover fast enough to get you right ontop of the target. A straight shaft would be a great mod. to take some of the twisting off of your wrist.

i waterproofed 1 & it worked fine
got a box from http://www.mountainsports.com/mssearch.asp?Option=Detail&Detail=006301
& drilled the holes for the coil & headphones & used black silacone to seal them
good luck
