anybody help I.D. this tiny french coin?

Somebody has driven a nail through it and used it as a button or so it seems. it's smaller than a dime and very thin. says LUD XVI on it. measures about 9 mm across. thanks & hh.

As you say its a French coin and as the revolution occured in 1789 then it must be older than that. The Revolutionaries re introduced the Franc and a decimal system of coinage to replace the Kings coinage. As it was the practise to deface anything left over from a previous ruler I wonder if that accounts for the nail as for button use they would not punch a hole through.
