I was detecting near a popular fishing hole and digging up lots of beer cans (At least I collect them for recycling so it is not a total waste of time) but I got a beep and started to dig. Up came a melted plastic bottle which I laid aside to take to the trash can and kept digging. Didn't find anything so I swept my dirt pile and the hole but no beeps.
I accidentally swept over where the melted bottle and heard "beep" thought that was weird so I sat down and laid the MD arcoss my kees and waved the melted plastic in front of the coil. Every time I did I got a hit.

Why would melted plastic hit. There was no metal cap in or on the plastic.

Inquiring minds want to know

Hmmm....only thing I can think of is there had to be some metal in that melted chunk somewhere...Perhaps the little ring that is left when you unscrew the cap???

We have a plastic recycle co. here in town they told me once that the used plastic was shredded then chemicaly melted to a point then heated. It would be possible for the ring to to be shredded and perhaps broken down enough to be mixed in with the plastic if the filters at the plant was in need of maintenance. That is what I was told about a plastic bottle with spots in it. I was not into metal detecting at that time so I never thought to try the detector. I don't know if this is the case or if it is even true, it's just some info I received
