Looking for advice from the pool of knowledge
I purchased one new 7 years ago and really have not used it. I was wondering how it compares to other detectors in its class???
The reason it got stuck in the closet is it made a lot of noise which made me dig many empty holes. I do not see anybody with this model which makes me wonder if this was an OK model or was it a flop? Not sure if the problem is the detector or that I need to just learn this it?

I have no problem trading it in for something better if that is the case. If somebody with knowledge of this detector can say it is a good detector worth learning I will have no problem putting in the time.

Thanks in advance fro your input:thumbup:

Go do a goggle search on it and read the reviews. It seems some of them may have had problems. A quick call to Garretts and they'll tell you the whats whats on it.

It's a decent machine and a lot were sold. You just never learned how to use it. Do you have the manual for it? If not you can download one from the Garrett site at the top of the page. Sounds like you ran the sensitivity to high - a mistake often made with Garrett detectors. Get it set up right and practice with it and you'll do okay.

Yes I do have the manual. I am the original owner. I did a Google search and really did not
turn up much which is why I joined the forum and posted.

Most of my detecting (and there really has not been much) has been with the factory presets.
It made a lot of noise. I have since started tweaking the factory settings to quiet it down but that
really reduces its depth.
I have been blown away from a entry model Bounty hunter for depth and target ID (using factory settings)
Some of the coin targets he found he would ask me to give it a swing before he dug it and in some cases i did not see the target, could not id it or did not get the depth correct. Where the Bounty hunter was dead on and repeatable.
I have the chance to trade this in for another Garrett, which detector would be recommended? Looking for something with similar features but more depth and quieter. The money is not as much a factor as the detectors ability. Right now I have not been convinced to be brand loyal (but their tech support has been great) so I am open to any suggestions.

Thanks

Yeah man, it sounds to me like your machine is not functioning properly. You might want to send it in to Garrett's for a check up. If ya decide to keep the machine, here's a link to the field test report from lost treasure magazine online.

Since you say that you can trade up to a different model and money is no object, I suggest that you get the GTI 2500. It totally blows away any machine in it's price range in both performance and versatility. It is an incredible creation and by far the machine that gets the most use from me.
Best of luck to ya whichever machine ya decide to get.:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

Yeah, it sounds to me like maybe you should either send it in or trade up for the 2500. Have tried just turning the sensitivity down to about 6 or 6.5.

You shouldn't rely on factory presets. Turn your sensitivity down to about 60%. Too many think sensitivity equals depth. It does not. It just makes the coil more sensitive to the target you hope to find but it also makes it more sensitive to all the mineralization and every piece of junk that was ever dropped, hence the noise you describe. This will also mask good targets. You're doing everything wrong if a BH beats you out.
