Anybody had any problems with Midwest Refineries?

My detecting partner sent two gold chains and a few rings to them this month when gold was $900 per ounce and still going up. He was paid a lot less than he expected. He called Gary at Midwest and was told one of the two chains is not gold. Any rejected jewelry is not retuned to the sender, so no way to prove that Gary was honest. My buddy said both chains were stamped 14K. I'd like to hear your experience with Midwest. Jabbo

I've not delt with them, but I have a heavy gold chain marked 14k Italy and upon testing it, it was not gold. So, your friends chain may not have been either. HH jim tn

I've dealt with Midwest Refineries a few times and have always been treated fairly. In fact, in the times that I sent items that I KNOW were gold I actually received a bit more than I expected. I've seen a couple folks become upset because Midwest pays a percentage of the GOLD CONTENT, not the gross weight of the items.

I've heard a lot about the mis-marked Italian jewelry. Here in AZ most of my foreign made finds are from Mexico and so far have been marked accurately. I sent two unmarked "home-cast" items to Midwest recently. I had no means to test them before I sent them, but one turned out to be around 18K, the other a bit over 20K! The refinery had every chance to rip me off, but they didn't. I'm convinced they are very honest.

I have dealt with them 6-7 times and am always happy. Also a good way to get free gold testing if you dont want the piece back. And contrary to Mark's reply - I have dug several bogus stamped gold items in Az. Steve in so az

I just decided to start using Midwestrefineries and was ripped off. I sent them several items marked sterling and they claimed they were .800 and then sent me half of what a local jewlelry store offered me. I also sent a knife handle that was solid and check by the local jeweler and they said it was filled which was a lie. I took the blade off myself and checked it by cutting into the knife and testing it with acid. NOT happy about trying midwest....... now I don't know what to do about this.

I have and have had no problems with them. There are a lot
pieces out there that are forgeries. Just because it has a 10, 14, or18k
stamped on it doesn't make it so. You are best off getting yourself
a testing kit (you can get them off Amazon) and learn to do your own
testing. If you have any doubts you can have it verified by a professional
jeweler. Mid Wes, I my opinion is OK.

I havent used Midwest, but can recommend ARA I just sent 2 14k rings little over 11 grams total and received a check for $269.50 about a week later. I calculated to receive approx. $288 but pretty close and was happy with it.

Why would you want to accept $17 or $18 dollars a gram for 14K gold that was at over $25.00 per gram today?? That is all that the local gold buyers will pay.

I have heard about ARA as well. Hear they are ok.
As for these outlets in town that buy gold, I don't waste my time.
I can do better selling to Midwest.

if referring to me, I made about $24-25 per gram ARA pays top rate locally you get squat, from what I have experienced.

I was definitely not referring to you. I was talking about folks that sell their hard won gold to the street buyers that set up shop all over town. We have a number of them in the Charleston SC area and they are ripping folks OFF. Paying $17 to $18 per gram for $14K gold that is worth over $25. Ara pays in the area of 98% of spot. That is a heck of a lot better than the roughly 60% that the fly by night buyers are paying.
