Any tips for removing a 7" coil cover???

Matt_SC

New member
I was gonna pull the cover off my 7" widescan this morning for cleaning. Couldn't get it to budge. Any tips for removal?

Thanks!

I have a 7" solid coil on my Compadre but no cover.
If you do have a cover on yours, and make sure that you do, here is a guy taking off a 9X8 coil cover.

Are you positive it has one. Mine looks like it has one, but doesn't. Almost ruined it.

Well, now you've got me wondering. I ordered a cover with the coil. When it arrived I assumed the cover was on the coil because it looks like it is and there was no separate cover. How can I tell for sure if it has a cover?

Post a picture. Preferably a micro shot.

Matt, 2 of my coils have covers, when I get my fingernails between the cover and coil you can see it separate. Now, my 9x8 cover I think is glued on(not by me), because I play hell trying to get it off. But I know it has one. My 7" coil has an edge around it that makes it look like a cover, but it isnt. I cant separate it at the seam like the others. If yours is a cover, it just may take some gentle persuading and slowly work it around the edges.
Do most dealers put the cover on for you before they ship? You might send them an email and ask.
Good luck.

OK, here are some pics. While we're at, I included pics of my Shadow 7 incher too 'cause I'm not sure if it has a cover or not either. I also have a 9X8 and a 12X10 and I know for sure they DO have covers and I have removed them without issue. Thanks for the help!

Sure looks like your Tesoro widescan coil has a cover on it to me.

Looks like a cover tome I also have two Shadow X2s and both have coilcovers and they do fit tight forsure I would suggest to take both thumbs and push down hard on the edge of the coil that is how I start the removal from my Shadow coils because they snap on tightly to the coil

Yep that's a coil cover. The best place to start is at the heal. You can use the rod to get a good grip. If you don't have good finger nails, use something else that's similar. Once it starts to move, slowly work your way all the way around the coil.

Good Luck

Just take a wooden dowel rod or a small block of wood and set it on the edge of the cover and take a small hammer and tape it and keep moving around the edge and watch for movement. You will need have the bottom of the coil open so the cover will have room to move. I have done this several times and it works. Just don't try to get a lot of movement from any one spot keep moving around. If needed put a pencil line or some tape on the coil at the edge of the cover so you can see movement.

Post a picture of all the gunk packed in under that cover.

Good luck,

You may have moisture under it creating one heck of a suction. It sure looks like a cover. Hope you get it off. Best of luck, let us know, please.

I got it off! I pulled and pulled and PULLED till my fingers hurt and it moved some but didn't come off. Finally used a piece of pvc and a small hammer to tap around the edge until it came off. There was only a very small amount of sand inside the cover, not bad at all.

Thanks for everyone's help!
