Any Tesoro Golden u Max users here? What's your take on the unit, Just picked one up.

Hello Tesoro comrades,
Just picked up a very nice Golden uMax with the ground balance mod, The unit impressed me with responding to my smaller gold jewelry.
Just one thing about the Golden uMax that does concern me, How does the unit operate in bad ground or iron laced sites? Will I have to crank up the discrimination to knock out the larger pieces of iron or chatter that bleeds over and in doing so knock out the smaller conductors?
Thanks and any comments about the Golden UMax wil be a warm welcome :

I dont have a golden umax but I do have a golden sabre II which your machine replaced. I have a 12' by 20' spot in my back yard that is LOADED with iron for some reason. I was able to sniff out 2 silver dimes and 3 wheaties from this crappy spot with my machine. The iron breaks up on my machine, It is never a solid hit, maybe one way but breaks up the other. I run my disc about 4-5 and dig every solid hit. For some reason my cutlass II umax does better on coins on edge but thats no biggie. The golden series are great detectors! Hey thats pretty sweet to get a golden umax with ground balance. Keep us posted on how it works out for you!

I traded a Golden recently for a Millennium Baron and kinda wish I hadn't. I put a 7" ShadowX2 coil on it, no loss of depth in air tests over the original out of round coil and it worked pretty darn well in ferrous trash. I set disc at 0, listened to everything and used the tones to decide whether to dig or not. If I got just a tiny high tone it was almost always a coin or something in the same conductivity range as a coin. Not as much depth as the new models but I got a couple of Roosevelt silver dimes at 6-7 inches with no problem. It's a fun detector.

Well you know. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
I thought it was a decent detector. I was not too impressed with those quacking tones though! <img src="/metal/html/frown.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":(">
Mine was not what i'd call deep, nor exceptional in any way, but for light weight fun, in dry sand and wood chips, I thought it was nice.
It's possible, of course, that you will gain a little performance with the GB added!
Fun machine, but no depth demon, nor was "MINE" anything special in trash.
It will fit a purpose! I replaced mine with a Euro Sabre. I can run it wide open, zero disc and it low tones or blanks iron- it's switchable.

Thanks for sharing your take on the Golden U Max, So far have spent about two hours with the unit and still trying to learn the tones. It'll be a while longer before I know the tones by heart. I'll carefully take all of you advice and make the most of the Golden U Max unit I master the detector, So far I like the unit. Depth is fair so maybe the ground balance does make a difference?
The unit already had the added on Ground balance mod only it was attached to a miniature black plastic box mounted to the side of the Tesoro housing, Last night removed the added on black box and inserted the ground balance pot inside the housing so the pot can be adjusted from underneath. This setup works well, Not enough room to place the pot on the face plate or on the left side underneath but did manage to squeeze the pot in the housing, That was a tight fit too.
I've enclosed a pic of the ground balance, Please excuse the dirty unit just used the Tesoro today and haven't had time to clean her up.
Thanks again my friends and happy holiday to you and your families,
Paul (Ca)

I also own a Golden uMax, and I like the way it operates, especially with the notch ability and its light weight. I wish the unit had a VDI and ground balance. I noticed at Radio Shack there was such a light weight unit, with a three digit VDI and a manual GB knob, which I believe is the same as the Titan units sold by Kellyco. Its cost is particularly attractive, comparatively, but since it's basically, I believe, a Bounty Hunter unit, I question its overall quality and performance. Any opinions out there, or does anybody have any experience with these units?

I owned a couple BH detectors for a while, then bought Garrett and Tesoro. You'll find more info on the BH product line by visiting their forum.

I like it looks much better then the hoousing stuck off to one side..Sent you an email...HH...Geo
