Any suggestions on which 18.75kHz coil

Hi People,
My 10" x 5" DD coil has given up the ghost....I am guessing some moisture in it (detecting in wet grass, or perhaps some sneaked in when I was cleaning it, at some stage). However, detector wasn't groundbalancing properly, and when I did get it to balance (through perseverence), it would eventually go back to giving improper signals, ie. numerical ID and tonal ID both lower than should be...low range targets did not register, either by No. or audio. At first I thought it was the detector (X Terra 70) which has had a lot of use, and doesn't owe me a thing (but I was still sad at the thought that it might be dying)...thought I would try a different coil (have had the 10x5 DD on for ages) and the detector went back to being normal...i.e. It showed correct ID and gave correct tones from startup....soooo, I presume it is the coil which is the problem. I want to replace the 10x5 with another 18.75kHZ frequency coil.

My question to anyone who has experience with the high frequency coils is, which one do you like best, and why? My understand is that I have 4 yto choose from: 9" concentric; 10x5 DD; 10.5" DD; and 6" DD.

I welcome, and thank you in advance for any input which you may wish to give.

If your not short on spare $$, get the 6" DD as it's waterproof and replace your 10x5 with a new one or send in the old 10x5 to Minelab for repair.

When the ground is wet or it's raining I use the 6" DD, on a sunny day with dry grass I use the 10x5.

Thanks BHL - your input is appreciated. I guess I can only afford one new coil at the moment...was just wondering how people felt about the different coils in the 18.75 range.

For general detecting, I'd stick with the 5x10 furious. I love the 6 inch, but it lacks ground coverage. I also like the idea of the concentric, as you get better audio feed back. I'm not a fan of the 10.5 round. Apart from being toe heavy, it doesn't separate anywhere as well as the 5x10.

FT, I run my 5x10 in wet grass often enough. No problems. Clean in a running hose. No problems. If you were having problems with the coil already I would send it to ML, especially if it is still in warranty.

Just a thought.

I use the 6" DD coil. For me it is a killer on small Gold and Silver. Water proof, yes it doesn't cover much ground but will make you go a lot slower in your search. the other coil I use is the stock 9" coil also water proof and WILL find small gold and silver.
If it's not water proof I do not use it. Also I put a small bead of silicone around the coil cover to keep out the fine sand when I beach hunt You can try the silicone around the coil covers on reg coils this will help a lot.

Last year i dropped my cell phone by accident in a swimming pool..... I took the phone and buried it in rice inside a sealed bag for two full days to suck out any water/humidity ..... remarkably the phone started up and is still working fine today........ worth a try on that 5x10 coil

Thanks All, for replies....good info there and good suggestions to try re "old" coil....I have used the 5 x 10 probably more than any other coil, and as I haven't bashed it or dropped it, I am assuming that it is moisture in the coil which has made it go the way it has. It would be well out of warranty now, so I dont know if it is worth sending it to Minelab...postage and "fix-it-time" could well come near the cost of a new coil. Used my 9" 7.5kHz today and the detector seems to be working fine...ground balanced ok and didn't "go out of tune", so I am still thinking it is the coil. Drying it out (or trying) is going to be my first option.

Thanks again to all who replied...appreciate it.

Pete

Let us know if the drying it out works.
