Any suggestions on what settings

I don't have my detector yet. Hopefully, by b/day (Feb 24) I will get a Garrett 250 ACE. I am absolutely new to this whole thing. I am really looking forward to it thought

But, when that time comes for me to use the detector for the first time. Do I just go with the factory settings on the machine? Or, do I need to change things around? All of this information I have read is just mind boggling! I imagine I have read through a couple detector forums, and am still lost as a goose :)

I know you will probably ask me "well, what are you going to be looking for?" Well, I will be looking for anything I can find :) Hopefully, not too much in the pop cans, bottle cap category though.

I know I asked a pretty vague question. Thanks in advance.

Hunt in coin mode, leave everything else as is but drop the sensitivity down to four bars to start with and practice your pinpointing.

do what uncle Willy said but also go to custom mode and only leave on nickel dimes quarter and up.Leave Penny's out and everything else just for practice in case the other becomes over whelming because of trash try to find a pretty clean site till you understand what it is saying.Yes Yes Yes,you will dig junk everyone does still, but you dig less as you do it more.If you ever went fishing when you started you use to get a lot of snags broken line knots but as the days passed you could cast farther get less snag and really no when a fish was tapping the line,so don't get discouraged,If some one comes by tooting the horn with a 1000 dollar machine try to take some advice but don't let him pull your leg that all the coins are gone and he doesn't dig trash, maybe less than someone new but he still dig it.Yes yes yes the 250 is a good machine i have other machines but the 250 is what i usually grab anymore finds a lot of stuff go pretty deep and in the right hands will give any top of the line detector a run for it money.Good luck and good hunting.I usually recommend the 250 when people ask what is a good machine even if they see my other machines. Nobody has beat it for 200 dollars. It is a good for beginner, intermediates and advance hunters.

... most of what youll ever need to know. Follow Bills advice - for now. Ive dug so much trash over the years that Im immune to it, but newbies can get discouraged quickly. Know that much treasure is in the form of "whatsis", items that arent valued, but are neat neveretheless.

And one gold ring or pendant can equal the cost of your detector - easy. By now you must know that nearly all gold will read as nickle/pulltab/screwcap. Once you find a gold item you will feel alot better about digging pulltabs.

....would be to start out in the coins mode on your local schoolgrounds with the sensitivity set as high as possible without experiencing audio "chatter" when holding the coil up in the air. To play with the notching a little bit, just notch out the lower zinc/screwcap segment, leaving open the nickel and higher coin segments. You will dig comparitively little trash set up this way, and can better concentrate your time on target pinpointing and recovery before moving on to other types of hunting and different settings or notching.

The 250 is a great little machine, and will keep you detecting and learning for a long time to come. Keep us posted on how it is doing for you.

>>>>"Once you find a gold item you will feel alot better about digging pulltabs."<<<<<

Amen to that. I don't mind a bit digging a hundred pull-tabs if it means the chance at a gold ring in the mix. From what I've already seen of the Ace 150, I know the 250 is going to prove to be a great little "ring machine", and I don't mean the belltone ! :)

It is a good for beginner, intermediates and advance hunters......

I think one reason it's so popular is cuz it's so
easy to use. You really don't have to do much of anything,
except set the sensitivity and start walking. Halfway
is a good starting point, but you can crank it a bit
farther if it doesn't chatter. I haven't actually tested
it, but I don't think the ID discriminations lowers the
depth much like on some machines. At least, if there is,
it ain't much. IE: If I run "coins", I seem to ping just
as deep on clad, as I do in "all metal" mode. So I think
the ID's can be set to whatever you want, or you can even
run all metal, if you don't mind hearing every bit of metal
in the ground. No matter how you set it, it's gonna detect
metal. Nearly foolproof really. :) I'm starting to learn a
few quirks with the ID..IE: pulltabs and nickles... Most
pulltabs I will see jump between nickle and pulltab. If
it jumps, it's probably a tab, but like they say, I dig em
anyway, cuz it could be a ring. Here in this Houston gumbo,
I often ID pennies as dimes. I think cuz they rot and leave
a halo of sorts, and look hotter than they are. So if I
ping up a dime, I'm never quite sure until I pull it up.
Practice will improve my reading of the machine I'm sure.
What I like about the 250 vs the cheap thing I once tried
years ago, I don't get false alarms that turn out to be
just changes in ground cdx.
If it beeps, there is metal of some kind in the ground.
You can pretty much take it to the bank. BTW, even if you
run in coins, etc, you still "see" the other metals that
ping up on the display, even though you don't actually
hear them.
That's kinda handy when probing a probing a hole near
other iron targets. I don't have to switch to "all metal"
to see it, if I'm running in "coin" mode.

Hey David, I'd like a copy of Bill's guide too, or the website (if there is one)...I've got a 250 on the way, and I want to use the machine to its max capacity! I know I could probably learn it on my own anyway with enough time, but why re-invent the wheel!
THANKS!!!

WOW! Bill's book is quite the collection of info and tips! Thanks again David for dropping me the 15 pages of "Yeller Feller" goodies!

Let me tell a quick ACE 250 and gold story. I took a novice out with me last week to a freshwater beach. Let him borrow my ACE 250. Turned it on and gave him a few quick pointers. I pulled out my hotshot GTI 2500 and went to the other end of the beach. In about five minutes he comes over and says, "What's this?" It was nothing except a very large mens wedding band 14k worth about $350.00! I found exactly $3.26 in clad! Never ever get discouraged! Monty

Actually its a compilation of stuff from Bill, Andy, 'ol Ben Myers and myself - although much of it is credited to Bill.
