Any reason to Go lower than 25 on Gain ?:minelab:

I ran a test on a deep silver coin (9") that I had detected before I dug it and found that 21 was perfect. Any higher just added more noise. If you are using an X-1 probe, it will go bananas at 25.

I have watched this forum since it began, and most users either say default Gain.....Or Max everything out....
I had tried fiddling with the Gain...Trying 27 as a high......Only went down to 24,because I was afraid I might miss some deeper coins....Now I am seeing more and more posts saying they are doing great with their Gain less than the default 25.......
Quit puzzling to Me.

McNickle,

I'm running at 24 and have no issues with my sunray probe and I have no problems with too much noise. I will test this weekend at lower settings on "in ground" targets and then post my results

I have had good results with turning my gain down lower than 25 if I was specifically looking for deeper coins in an area with lots of near surface clad. It also seemed to help with the machine falsing small nails up to the 1- 40 line. Turning the tone variability down one or two notches also helped with the falsing which doesn't make a lick of sense to me as it is an audio setting, but it seemed to help a great deal. On your gain setting.....compared to the SE where the setting went from 1-10, the ETrac is 1-30. The scales are parallel and linear meaning a gain of 7 on the SE equals a gain of 21 on the Etrac, and 10 on SE would equal 30 on the ETrac, etc. Just multiply the SE x 3.

There is no perfect answer. It is a matter of personal choice. I keep my gain set low. I dont have a hearing issue that may preclude me from hearing a lower volume response, and I personally prefer the ability to audibly be able to distinguish deep targets. I have been running my gain between 12-15 and have had no problems hearing SLQ's and LC's at 12" without any problem, and when I did hear them, my first thoughts where, it sounds really deep, I bet its going to be a good one.... If the gain was maxed out, they would have sounded just like every other target...

since i started running my gain @ 17 my finds have greatly increased ,probably because i can hear that the target is deep.I dont really have a good answer, just what has been working for me

Hey Dave, We can do some machine to machine testing when the weather gets better. I would like to see which works better in the areas we hunt. TMAN...

I actually just changed from fast on deep off to deep on fast off.I think it kind of negates the lower gain setting but i really like the sounds alot better .What i need to figure out is i like the lower gain setting and i like the sound better with deep on but i am afraid i might be missing targets even with the slower swing speed i was using to try and offset the slower recovery speed.I need someone to let me know what am i going to do to my setup if i have deep on and fast on because i am not sure and havent really tried?

Dave, I went to Crownpoint this morning and hunted around some of the pole barns at the fairgrounds. I put the gain to 20 and fast was off. I could tell a little difference in how things rang up in 4 tone. They were a little softer or should I say not as banging as the more shallow targets. I dont know if I like it because with some of the areas we hunt that are trash laden, the tone might not come through as well as it would with a higher gain. There is some more testing needing to be done to decide for me. BTW I only got 2 zincolns and 2 dimes but it was nice to get out for the first time in a month. TMAN...
