I was wondering what coil besides the stock MXT coil you use or would recommend for fine gold and quartz/gold rocks. Or will the stock coil be OK?
Thanks / capnron

The stock 950 will do very well, although the 10x6 DD is prefered for greater ground coverage, and also for the enhanced ability to cope with highly mineralized ground. HH Jim

many prefer a widescan (Double-D) coil for coverage and some amount of help if the groud is challenging.
Personally, I like White's 5.3 Eclipse because it's a bit hotter on smaller gold than is the stock 950. The 5.3 Eclipse is what I consider to be a "do all" factory coil for the MXT.
In an 'aftermarket' coil, I really like the 5" EXcelerator for working sites with tinier-sized targets, or where I want to get in and around brush and rocks.
For 'coverage' I would opt for the 8" solid coil or 10" open-design coil, both of which are D-D EXcelerator coils.

If your doing creeks,or dry washes, look at the 4x6 minishooter DD or go to the Jimmy Sierra web site and look at the (2x9 hotshot DD coil)...YOU need to stay close to the ground and gold hangs up in cracks and crevises...it is those tight spots that you have to get into...

Thanks very much for the input everyone. I can see a smaller coil and the DD type being nice to have for different situations. The area I plan to search has both fine gold and gold embedded in quartz. I don't know just how mineralized the ground is yet but it may be a factor in my choice. I need to spend a day in the area using the stock coil to see what the ground and terrain will require.
