Any one ever hunted on a river bank

I was thinking of going on the banks of the ohio river alot of people fish there so we will see what i come up with.

Jensman I have been wondering the same thing.Every year I go down to southern Ohio at least once in the summer to hit the flea markets. I have been considering taking my detector with me this year and trying the river bank. I lived down that way about twelve years ago and used to spend alot of time walking along the Ohio river. Found a barber dime once. and a brass spoon once. these Items were just lying on the bank. If you do decide to detect along the river let us know how it goes. Blade310

I've hunted a riverbank a couple of times in an area where the kids go to party. found a lot of beer cans and rusty nails. also found a number of those lead sinkers. Never a keeper though. Good luck on a bigger river. The Ohio has been in use for a whole lot longer than my little river here, so you odds are pretty good.

you will probably find alot of fishing gear (hooks, sinkers, lures). maybe you will find an old fishing lure that is valuable. coins and jewelry are good possibilities as well. if you can, you may want to find out areas where people like to fish or see if there were any favorite swimming holes. These would be some of the best places to search. You may want to look at a local history book to find more great areas to search.

If you're anywhere near Tell City, Indiana, that would be a good part of the river to hunt. If I remember right, there are some treasure legends that pertain to the area too.

Out here in the northwest, the banks along the Salmon River can produce about anything. Most of it though will be junk such as melted aluminum foil and cans from old camp fire pits, buried beer and pop cans, spent ammo cases, pull tabs, bottle caps, lead sinkers, fishing swivels, and hooks. I have hunted the popular sand bars but have yet to find any toe rings or other jewelery. Have found lots of metal tent stakes. My one detector has quite an ability to find very small bird shot. I do find coins but nothing old around the river banks yet. Above the river at an old turn out along the old highway, I did find one day a 1941 Wheat and some old horse shoes. The trash was very minimal. Another location above the old highway just above the river produced an abundance of old hand forged square nails.

My biggest dislike with hunting along the river is all the trash. There is so very much that if you were to pick and pouch everything, you would never get any meaningful metal detecting done. A small coil though does help a bunch.

What about walking in the river and searching the river bottoms of smaller canoe style rivers? Thinking of putting on some waders and having a look. Ground here is sooooooooooooo dry its impossible to detect. So figured get the beach scoop out and head there.

The main river here (White) floods regularly depositing silt well above the regular water-line. There's an old park here the river runs through (which I've hunted for clad a few times), but it also has a lot of hills well above the river...and I've been meaning to walk the hills (which are also wooded), just haven't made it yet. I may try next week, been wanting to get-out anyways. :detecting:
