ANY NUGGETS IN NSW ?

Are there nuggets to be found in NSW ? If so, what areas. Will the MXT be worthwhile in Australia?

Any info or tips will be helpful.
Thanx

There's a lot of nuggets to be found here in NSW as long as you visit a known Goldfield. Just be sure that your detector can handle the minerals and you'll be fine. Sydney is on a coal deposit so you'll need to travel North, South or West (closest) by a few hours to reach any of the nearest Goldfields. There's a few more zones in the more remote areas of the state as well although the best hunting for you would probably be just a few hours out of Sydney.

The townships of Nundle (North of Sydney), Hill End (West of Sydney) and Braidwood (to the South of Sydney) would be ideal places for a visitor to explore. The Bathurst region and surrounding districts have nearly 600 separate deposits where gold can be found, most of which offer up nuggets.

Cheers,

Marco

Thanks Marco, What month(s) of the year would be best to visit?

Hi Cessna,
From Spring (starting yesterday over here on September 1) through to December is ideal. It tends to get a little warmer in Summer time here so from December to late February-March it may get pretty tough when you dig targets and the temperatures are soaring. Usually there's a lot of flies about in late October when they can get out of hand... you can wear a fly net or buy some repellent in a can. Most prospecting supply stores tend to carry some here. Try to get some strong stuff because our bush flies are far more persistent than city flies. It's not unusual to have more than 600 flies on you when they reach plague proportions and bush flies don't move when you swat at them. Ticks are usually only a problem closer to the coast or further North of the state. Snakes are out in these months but they're very timid. You can bring some snake gaiters with you or buy some on Ebay if it makes you feel a little safer. To my knowledge, no Prospector has been bitten whilst detecting but a few of us have had coils snapped at. A bigger, heavier pick will help you dig deeper holes faster but if you are visiting from overseas, buy one here... don't bother flying one in. Might be worth joining up with a Prospecting tour here as they may be able to take you out with them and show you the more remote locations etc. Most people here will be very helpful towards out of town visitors.

Cheers,

Marco

Thanx Marco, I think the "group thing" will be our best option. We're getting exicited as we plan our trip. Everyone on this forum has been so helpful. Please keep the info and travel tips coming.

Yeah what Marco said!

I've never EVER heard of someone on a prospecting tour to not find at least one nugget.

Dicko..

Sounds like fun! I can't wait to meet ya'll and find some Gold !

Hi Cessna,

N.S.W. still has a zillion patches still to be discovered. I can not recall a trip to Hillend in 35+ years where I have come home empty handed.

Autumn, Winter and Spring I find are the best times for detecting, Summer apart from been uncomfortably hot a lot of the times is probably our storm season and EMI can play havoc with your detector.
Often once it hits mid day and the ground heats up you can forget detecting for the rest of the day. You can rug up against the cold but can't always combat the heat.

Many of us detect at night with headlights, minimal EMI and you can max out the machine and concentrate much more.

Here's and ounce from last week at HillEnd, from .2g to 9.4g
