Any Lake or River Hunters had Issues with Giardia?

I was just curious if any of you freshwater guys have had to deal much with giardia? I'm not going to let the possibility keep me out of the water but I'd like to know what your experiences have been.

Sure have had experience with it - me and hunting buddy both. It is one way to 30 pounds in a hurry, but it is't not a good way. We had it once, in the same summer. May even have got it at the same lake. I would say don't worry about it, just be aware of the symtoms. Look them up on a site like WebMD. Easy to treat if you get. If you start to have the symptoms get to a doctor - it doesn't cure itself! Also, beware of "duck worm" common called swimmers itch. Not everyone is reacts to this, but if you are one of the lucky 30% of the population like me - head to the doctor fast also. You will know if you have this fast, within an hour for me. Pills and creams are the answer. I got it bad once, about 100 bites on each leg. Being stubborn I waited and put up with all night - itching, burning, welts. I couldn't sleep. A pill or 2 and cream and I was feeling better. It takes more than 2 pills but they start to give you relief fast. I've this twice and a few time were I got a bite or 2, not bad. But on the up side you may 70% of the population who don't react. Best of luck and don't let either one hold you back from fresh water hunting. I hunt anyway. The odds are in you favor. Any more question about this I would be glad to answer. Jim Kochevar

Thanks for the info Jim, I'll be checking WebMd for the symptoms to watch for. I'm sure the bugs I got living in me already would find those little giardia guys quite tasty.

No prob. I'm glad that I could have helped .
When I took my Trappers Ed course 16 years ago they told us about the little critters that lived in the water that the bigger little critters leave behind on land and water and the more folks that are informed the better. Good luck hunting.
