any instructions for making a sand scoop

I made this one yesterday with a old stainless steal pot from goodwill (1.00),2 u-bolts(stainless) and shovel handle(10.00). Works great in the surf.

http://www.instawares.com/silverware-cylinders-s-s.cyl-ss.0.7.htm#gallery you can get silver ware drainers SS or plastic and cut them on an angle !

Look around your area for a scrap metal salvage yard. They often have a pile of stainless scrap metal that may be a source of the materials you need at a fraction of the cost of new materials. Sometimes they will not let you browse through their wares because of liability issues.

In my area I havn't had a problem though. I reasure the man in charge that I will not climb around on the metal piles (an extremely dangerous move) and that I will be very watchful of the equipment running about the yard. (They must not be kept from their work by a browser!!!).

That has allowed me to build 2 sturdy stainless water hunting scoops and 1 dry sand scoop for little more than pocket change. Sometimes it's better (and safer) just to shop around for the perfect scoop if you have limited mechanical skills or no tools or you would rather be hunting treasure and not "wasting time" in your workshop.(It's a great winter project.)

That is awesome. Could you tell me how heavy it is and what are the dimensions of the stainless steel basket? That looks like something that isn't to heavy. I am looking for a new scoop but if I can make one like what you have that would be awesome. Do you think that the wood handle will last? Did you buy a nice thick wooden handle? So many questions. But you are the only one I have seen that had a great Idea and put it to work. If you want you can private message me with all the answers. Thanks

...did you use to cut it with, if I might ask?

That idea is the best I've seen on here in a long, long time. who needs to spend a $100.00 PLUS on a scoop????

I'll be on the lookout for me a stainless pot now!!!

A four inch cut off wheel( the thin one) on a handheld grinder. It cut it like butter,5min..It took longer to draw the lines than to cut them.lol I rounded everything to decrease the chance for stress cracks. If anyone has any idea's about drilling holes in stainless please post them,I drilled pilot holes and it still dulled the bit half way and I had to sharpen it for the second half.

I thought i seen one that looked like it was made of large plastic pipe cut to an angle and with some sort wire mesh on the back with a handle.

I just wanted to get some ideas. No real beeches in my area to justify a real scoop for what they want for a new one.

When drilling stainless steel, use a slow speed and a lot of pressure and some drilling and tapping compound. high speed will just glaze the stainless and burn the drill out. Start with a small drill and work your way up in size. The bigger the drill, the slower the speed, and clamp the job to stop it grabbing and tearing you hands to bits. Best of luck, Bob:ausflag:
