Any input on the older Toltec II... I know there are some veteran hunters out there that used and loved this unit....

Can the control box be mounted under the arm cup to balance it better? how did the meter work out for you ?

Hello Jay

There is ample coil cable to move the control box under the elbow, but then you cannot see/use the controls very easily. It is better to belt mount the box if you can tolerate that setup

The meter works well for both ID and depth. The red thin needle requires sharper eyes to see though

And of course you have to love the rich tones on the older Tesoro machines. The newer Cibola and Vaquero cannot compare in that dept

An interesting note is that the meter itself is just that, a simple meter. There are no additional circuits inside the meter box. The two meter leads just connect to two of the cable leads. I did wonder if the meter would work with other Tesoro machines, but never tried it. It could be an inexpensive way to add ID to the Tesoro machines?

Thanks Ken.... that's a good question....... anyone ever do that with another tesoro unit?

I have a Toltec II as you are aware of Jay ;), its the only detector I have so there is no way I could try the meter on another Tesoro detector. Using the meter on another detector is a good question, one of us should give the factory a call and see what they say. My eyes are not the best now (at least at seeing things that are close) and I don't have a hard time seeing/reading the meter. I never hunt in the dark but the meter has a switch to turn on a light & it works well. Steve.

P.S. The Toltec II isn't really heavy just a bit heavier than the

of a Minelab Sovereign

I have had mine since 1994.......brand new at the time. I've tested it against some of the newer digital detectors (XLT, DFX and Minelab EX ll) and it will still outhunt those detectors in a rusty nail strewn old house site. The meter is really accurate down to about 6 inches and then downscales the ID somewhat, once the meter is figured out you can just about call what is coming out of the ground (high coins). The nickle, pulltab to screwcap range on the meter is anybody's guess at what will come out of the ground. The meter is just another tool with which to work with, but not as a final decission maker. In old sights I use the Toltec ll like a non-metered detector and dig anything above ferrous (iron). The Toltec ll is just a delight to use, great analog sound, analog meter, complete operator control (disc./threshold/sens./ground bal.) and Two threshold based all-metal modes. If you get it........you will like it!
