[attachment 51585 MVC-001F.JPG]went detecting today for a while back in the woods , didn't get any coins but ran across these bottles in a old dump...... I was wandering about the large one in the middle , it's almost still full of something and has a glass cork in it... my question is how do you find out anything about a bottle if there is no writing on it except for one place that says full 1/2 pint....thanks bob.

I call the ones that have nothing embossed on them....Plain Jane's....They use to have paper lables on them. Bottle Books would be a good place to start...but without the lable, one can only generlize what type of product was in it. Like if it says half pint my guess is Booze. Food bottles are considered ones with a wider mouth top than most, and medicines look like medicines....Ones with bumps or raised lines on them is poison that was done just in case they didn't invent light bulbs yet and you were half asleep and in the poorly lit room trying to get meds so if you felt bumps on bottle you would know it was poison. They aren't worth much really except to the eye. But some are so don't toss them out until you get someone to tell you diff. no color ones are usually not good........but get into colored glass then yes! maybe! I use to find dumps hunting Deer and pissed my buddy off cause I would stop to dig and scare the deer away!......Sucks being him!

thanks for the info I don't usually find many bottles when I'm detecting, but this dump caught my eye because of a few old bottles... I could see where the dump started out with bunches of older broken bottles of all colors then about sixty feet west I could see alot of newer bottles and junk. this pile is about 20 feet tall adn from the looks of all the glass that was dumped there it would have been a modern day gold mine if all wern't broken.......thanks bob.

Hello Bob, the tall bottle with some of the contents inside looks like a small whiskey bottle. I like the little glass stopper. The bottle to the front left, I have a pale lilac like it. Might be medicinal, as for the others, they could be tonic bottles, particularly the pale green glass to the right of the supposed whiskey bottle.
