Button maybe? There's a wreath around the inner ring with fancy work around the edges. The side is tooled
like quarter. The back is worn off.
 
The square hole in the middle gives it away as a very old Chinese coin. The wreath is I can assure you is Chinese character. I have found a few.
 
Could also be the crank which goes in the square stem of an oil lamp.

looks like the backplate of a cabinet knob.i doubt if its a chinese cash coin. looking through "world coin guide" did not see any coins with wreath design like yours.
