This was one of my first detecting finds a LONG time ago, and I have no clue what it is... It was found in LaGrange Tn, amongst some CW bullets including a .69 Minie. It appears to be some sort of hinged buckle, you can see the teeth on the top piece. HH Joe

Joe, could it be a portion of a Curry Comb?

Kim

I dunno, thought I'd post more pics... It is 5 5/8" long.

I need to do some research on curry combs then, to me it looks like some sort of spring loaded buckle.... but I am new at the relic thing... HH Joe

Just found this thanks to you pointing me in the right direction!! I can't find a decent photo, so I can't see how you would comb ANYTHING with this.... HH Joe

I keep finding things like these called curry combs, and I can see where you could comb something with it, but can't seem to find an intact specimen of what I have, does anyone have a link or something to the "thing" with the tree root in it, intact? HH Joe

I can see where you could comb something with yours, I am still not sure mine isnt some kind of buckle or something as the teeth face in and bare against a solid plate.

And that is the one I have, without the tree root.... For the life of me I couldnt figure out how one could possibly comb ANYTHING with it... The one with the root was for sale on the net somewhere, and they called it a curry comb, but like I said, I dont see how. Hey, at least I know there are at least 2 of them out there... HH Joe

I think you have a back strap clasp that attached to a piece of heavy canvas about 5 or 6 inches wide and went over a horse or mule's back. The hook on the end was hooked into the trace chain.

What is a curry comb used for? I found something today that one side looks like what is shown in the book in the lower left hand corner. I'll take a few pics in a little bit to show.

Well, I sort of answered my own question after google image searching curry comb. I've attached a picture of one I found, pretty much identical to the one I found today. I can't imagine a horse liking one of these.

Anyway, in response to the original post, I don't think what you found is a curry comb.
