any ideas what this is?

I found this close to a war of 1812 button. It is about 10 inches long, on one end/link has the letter"N" and on the other end/link has a letter "P". I haven't been able to find anything on it, any ideas?
 
I think it is the insides of some kind of battery, N is Negative and P is positive. Sorry not much more help but I'm sure I'm on the right track.
