Does anyone know what this is.
It is quite heavy weighing about 2lb, possibly iron based and it is also quite magnetic pulling the needle round on my compass..
It was found on one of our local beaches, where we have little industry. I took it into the local rock shop but the man had no idea what it was.
I thought it was a concretion at first but no I don't think so.
Any help would be appreciated

Hi have you tried tapping it with a hammer, to see if it rings.
Di the rock man say no to it being a meteor,
With a weight of 2lb it could be some chain links rusted in to a ball, used as canon shot,

[size=large]an alien egg.?ballast rock from some ship?

No idea. If the cost is rocky with a lot of wave action, it could easily beat something into a shape like that. Let's hope it is a meteorite though.
Good luck and HH - Robin

Well I turned out it was a large lump of concretion, the largesr I have ever found. When I eventually managed to smash it open with a hammer it contained what looks like a very old core drill about 4in across with 4 heavy teeth.
Shall have to keep hunting for the good stuff.
Went down the beach yesterday sand had dropped about 4ft in places if it goes down anymore it will be down to bed rock.
