Hi Everybody,

Found this bullet Saturday amongst others down in sunny Florida. The caliber is .654. I think it's a Brunswick rifle bullet. Not totally sure though as I can't find any examples on the internet. The picture of it in the Civil War Projectiles book isn't to good. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Bill

I did a search on brunswick bullet and came up with a drawing of one on wikapedia. The discription sounds right but the drawing is not much help. I found one of these in Resaca, Ga. with several case shot on a hill side. It is a neat find whether its a brunswick or a wierd case shot.

The diameter and banding on your ball could be a Bormann based spherical case shot or a Parrott Rifle case shot. Bormann spherical case ranges from .55 to .72 and has a distinctive raised band as yours does. if this is correct the piece that fired the projectile would be a 6,12 or 24 pounder smoothbore. Start looking in the area for other shot or projectile fragments.

Thanks for the info Dave. I did find a piece of 12 lb. shrapnel a few feet from the banded ball like the one maclore has pictured above.

Thanks for the replies. I have yet to find any pieces of artillery there. I did find another drop of a round ball with no band but the exact same caliber. I guess when the flooding dies down, I'll have to go see if I can find any more. I will say that there is some variety of bullets here. Must have driven the supply guys nuts! Thanks again.
