I dug this where my grandparents lived many years ago. My brother says it represents a mule shoe. Anyone know what it is??

In the 1800's and early 1900's superstitious people in some areas of the south nailed a horseshoe, or a smaller replica of one, over the front door of their house. The belief was that it kept spirits away and depending on whether it was attached with the open end up or down it could catch good luck or allow good luck to pour down on those who passed under it. I found one very similar to yours at an 1850's era homesite here several years ago and posted it on one of the forums. I got an email from a college proffessor explaining what it was and what it was used for. Don't know if he was right or not but it made an otherwise piece of junk interesting<img src="http://images.boardhost.com/emoticons/tongue.gif">.
