I feel it's very likely an ornate hair barette. I have one from the 40s I found which is a small pair of scissors. Folks put more into their creations back when they didn't have guaranteed customers like today. I'm guessing the two small projections at the bottom were tucked beneath the hair to help the appearance of a bird nesting in a young girl's hairstyle.

Hey Marc,
Any more information on the back regarding the patent date other than the year?
Have a GREAT day & HH.

Steve, I am the one Marc posted this for, and as far as I can tell and see it has below the word Pat, some letters that if you look close enough look like BZFJ2,then below that is the Pat date of 1913

Hey Carol,
The reason that I ask is you can search the online records of the U.S. Patent Office for patents all the way back to 1790. However, from 1975 back to 1790 you can only use either the specific Patent Number or the CCL (Current U.S. Classification number). But if you know the date of issue you can work backwards, it takes a bit of time but it can be done.
For example:
If you only know the year

In the year 1913.

The first Utility Patent No. Issued was 1,049,326
The last Utility Patent No. issued was 1,083,266.
Total number of Utility Patents issued in 1913 was 33,941

The first Design Patent No. issued was D043,415
The last Design Patent No. issued was D045,097
Total number of Design Patents issued was 1,683

If you can add the month in the year the patent was issued. Since Patents are issued on every Tuesday of each month, you can use the Patent No. to bracket a range and determine which numbers were issued in Jan. 1913 (i.e. Tue. the 7, 14, 21, and 2:geek:

The number of characters (i.e. 5) BZFJ2 fits in but the values don

Steve, Thanks for the help and hopefully I'll be able to find out what it is for sure, I think this could be one of two things, either a fancy hair clip like Marc and the other person said, or the bird piece that lifts up could be to hold a scarf in place, only reason i say that is the prongs that are sticking out run in the opposite direction, Who know's maybe i can find out what it really is.

Steve, I went to the patent link you gave me and had no luck, any other ideas?? Thanks

Hey Carol,
Wow! You went through and looked at approximately 34,000 utility and 2,000 design patents, that is one heck of a lot of work in four days lady.
Unfortunately, many times the drawings of items being patented don

Steve, No I didn't go that far LOL, went to the cite and had the patent date and the initials up and didn't get anywhere, so that's where I'm at now, but I have gotten in touch via e-mail with a couple Antique and still waiting to hear form one of them. SORRY I had you thinking, but do have some time to find out what it is, One place said it sounds like some kind of fur holder, and offered to send the pics. of it. wasn't interested in seeing them so i am waiting to hear form another place, later.

Here's a pic of one with a similar back attachment.
At the link below is an image search with lots of different designs, many showing similar backs.

Steve, Still no luck on finding out what this is, but i have a friend I talk to and his dad is an antique dealer, he wasn't sure just what it was either, so his dad and himsent it to the Antiques Roadshow web to see if anybody there knows what it is, Hopefully someone there will know, I'll keep ya posted.
