Any idea what this is?

Could it be a marker of some sort? It appears to be solid lead, very heavy, I haven't weighed it but would guess around 5 pounds. Could that be what the V signifies?
Sorry the picture is so large.
Thanks in advance.

Looks like an old hunk of plumbers lead. They would use it to seal their connections, I have no idea about the "V" but that sounds right...d2

Yeah I would say it's an ingot of plumbers lead or bullet makers lead depending on composition.

What a coincidence! I was just hunting an old (1740's era)farmhouse and found one like this in the front yard. Mine had the same shape, except that cast into it, it said "LEAD". No mistaking what it was. The owner said that plumbing was installed in the house in the last century, and the plumber probably dropped that in the tall grass (no lawn mowers back then). I will probably put it in the braggin' pile. HH - JHinPA.

Of course, I was hoping it was silver!! <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">
Bullet making lead is a possibility since it was found near a road and house that was in use during the cival war. I dug it near a 100 year old tree. The house was connected to sewer and the line ran within 10' or so of where it was found, so most likely it is plumbers lead. I haven't found any CW relics in the area either.

Thanks for the confirmation. I thought sure I had found an ingot of silver or gold! <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">
I'll do the same, put it in my pile of unusual and interesting finds.
How much does lead go for per ounce?? <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
