Any idea what this is from? Very old lid of some sort from old homestead...

It was quite deep - same homestead where I pulled the 1869 IH cent and number of other old relics. This appears to be a lid of some sort. Note the design with two concentric circles of dimples and twelve stripes on either side of the circles - size is approx 4" x 5". Appears to be hinged at the top as I can see the wire that it pivotted on. Very thin and very brittle - any tips on preservation? I'm hoping that this is pre-Civil War - any help on an id would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for looking.
