Any idea what this is from? Very old lid of some sort from old homestead...

It was quite deep - samehomestead where I pulled the 1869 IH cent and number of other old relics. This appears to be a lid of some sort. Note the design with two concentric circles of dimples and twelve stripes on either side of the circles. Appears to be hinged at the top as I can see the wire that it pivotted on. Very thin and very brittle - any tips on preservation? I'm hoping that this is pre-Civil War - any help on an id would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for looking.

Hey Erik,

Can't say what this piece is. But I can give you a tip for this and future reference. When you're trying to bring out detail in an impressed design, put a little baby powder on (in this case) the impression. Spread the powder about until it highlights the deign in your piece.

Sometimes this helps to ID a piece if a motif, design or lettering can be brought out.

As awalsy, don't throw anything away until you can ID it as not worthy of the display case. But this piece just simply looks old. I'd hang on to it!

Richard, Thanks for looking and appreciate the tip. It's a little smaller than I wrote to you - it's approx 3" x 4-1/2"...it's obviously a lid for something, but what? It was very deep ... I thought it was going to be a tin can or some junk. Definitely appears to be quite old. Lots of interesting relics at this site....see my post from yesterday and I have several more things that I found this evening that I'll try to post tomorrow......Regards, Erik
