Any Idea What This Button Is?

Just dug this today. I believe soldiers were at this site in 1880 and again in 1916. I was wondering if any one has an idea as to what branch it belongs and what era they used it. Thanks for the help...PS found in a desert ghost town in southwestern New Mexico

I have a button just like it that I dug and I have some more that I aquired at an estate action. I belive these were used in world war 1 & 2 up to the 70's ? Great find, good collectable. Does it have the eye intact? And can you read the backmark?

This button looks to be the WWI Army type which was bronzed/ darkened. The "rimmed" button as you have was used from about 1912- the 20's bronzed, then 20's- later gilted. The rimmed button would have been preceded by the "rimless" pattern which was made from 1902-1912, also bronzed.

1916 would be the time period when the US Army was mobilized for duty on the Mexican Border after Pancho Villa raided the town of Columbus, NM. This period, along with the uniforms and accouterments worn by the US Army during that time is a passion of mine. Here's some of my stuff as worn on the Mexican Border by the Regular Army in 1916.

Jeez. I didn't even notice the writting on the back. I can't make it out but I'll get my loupe out of the truck in the morn and look again. It has a bit of information on the back. And yes, the eye is intact. Thanks for the help. Here's pic's of the back.

While I was putting together these photos FrankieG posted. Man, that hits it on the proverbial button. The troops posted during the Columbus Raid. Also, I believe troops came up north where I'm at in Truth or Consequences (Hot Springs back then), to help out with the Elephant Butte Resivoir. Thanks big time for the help you guys.,
