Any CTX-3030 users in SW Michigan?

Diggin-it

New member
The 3030 being my very first Minelab product has me dazed and confused. I'm looking to find a mentor that can teach me at least the basics of what the detector is telling me. One very frustrating thing is pinpointing. On top of the ground or right under the surface its spot on. Get more then a few inches down and I find that its no where near where I pinpointed...is there a trick to this? I know there was on the AT-Pro's DD coil, and I'm hoping someone can atleast help me get pinpointing down. This thing is DEEP in the water...holy smokes...digging crusty pennies at 10+ inches. But its a nightmare to recover since my pinpointing knowledge is horrible with this machine.

Desperately needing knowledge. I got it for sale already because of my frustration.

I dont have the ctx but do have a etrac, I use the wiggle method on the etrac. Not sure if it works on the ctx but give it a try, go back and forth swing over the target and keep moveing the coil back when the sound of the target goes away the target should be at the tip of the coil. Hope it helps. With that method you dont need to be in pinpoint mode.

Make and X when pinpointing. At the highest tone draw an imaginary line on the ground through the denter of the coil. Turn 90 degrees to the target and do it again. X marks the spot.

First decide on which pinpoint you are going to use. There are 2 on the CTX they are called Normal and Sizing. You can select which one you want via the menus. Take a coin on clean ground and experiment with both pinpoint modes. You should only be pushing the pinpoint button when the coil is not over the target. In normal pinpoint you will get a smaller pinpoinmt with each pass of the coil. Not so with sizing. Pinpointing can be a pain in the arse when you are trying to use it where there is trash/items in close proximity to your target of interest. With a lttle practice/experience you will probably not use the pinpoint feature very much or any at all. By the way I believe the defaullt pinpoint on CTX is Normal pinpoint. Coins on edge will give you fits at times when trying to pinpoint. If you don't believe me take an old butcher knife and stick it in the ground about 3 inches and make you a nice thin slit. Next take a coin and push it in to the slit about 3-4 inches down. Next try and pinpoint it with the CTX. I think you'll find your pinpoint to be a good 2-4 inche off to one side or the other.

Dont sell yet! Takes a while to learn the machine. I am learning myself too. Set pinpoint to normal. Place a small suitable target on the floor or ground and use pinpoint function. This will allow you to correlate the machines noises with the true position of the target. If you want a little more distance hold coil higher or cover target with a book.
Above all try to remain patient and learn the machine. I learn a lot more every time I take it out hunting... HH

I'm in SE Michigan - Livonia. Hang in there with it - there is no better machine on the market. My brother lives closer and has a CTX as well - we'd be happy to help if we can...

There is no doubt this is a super machine, but I am the weak link. A machine is only as good as the operator and well with this machine I am  I would pay for classes to teach me how to run this bad boy properly:lmfao:

Hang in there this is my first Minelab one thing I did in the beginning was I went and hit the school foot ball and baseball feild and the play grounds for clad to learn the sound and number that really help and now 7 weeks in hunting with this detector I am pulling some nice old deep coins. So get out and hunt as much as you can. :twodetecting::thumbup:

One thing about Minelabs is that you should swing them pretty slow. A complete swing left and back right should take at least 4 seconds. I'm guilty of going too fast most the time. One of my buddies with an AT Pro goes like a wild man. His swings are about 2 seconds or less left and back right and with a full stride as he walks. I don't know how he finds anything but he does.

I swing the same way as I have an AT-Pro. The Pro is much faster...if you have good hearing you can swing as fast as you want. It is annoying to have to swing so slow so the processor can keep up...and old habits are hard to break:lmfao:
