Any cannonball experts out there.....

I went to an old site that I've found some decent cw buttons but pretty much worked it out. Took out my new excal and tried a few new places. I dug this cannonball about 2 feet down. I weighs 9.4 pounds and is 4" across. Any info would be greatly appreciated...

Dug some other stuff too. Overall chilly and windy in SC but a lot of fun learning the tones of the excal.

Hey Pappy, can you get an exact OD on this one? I can tell you 12-pounders are in the ballpark of 4.52 in order to fit a 4.62" bore while six-pounders are about 3.58" for a 3.62" bore.

Hope this helps!

I dug two in VA!!! Some of my favorite digs! :) Congrats!

Thats a good qeustion my friend has had this one and a few more for years. I know it doesn't look that old but he said he found them in a creek. I checked it and it seems to wiegh around 6 pounds and i tried to measure it and its around 3 5/8" in diameter. it apperas to have a seam and a large (tit) flat spot on one site where it may have been casted. has anyonne else seen one with a large flat spot on one side? any help is greatly appreciated

is spot on. "12 pounders" and "6 pounders" have exacting diameters. Measure the diameter and you'll have your answer. Now, having said that, remember, there are earlier projectiles and odd calibers floating around. Pick up a copy of Mason & McKee's "bullet book" for plenty on CW artillery. No relic hunter should be without that book. David@Dixie

looks like the one I've got is the 6-pdr. Since I've GENTLY taken a wire brush to it and remeasured. Same size and approx, the same weight.

hope this helps....

a friend of mine who has found many told me of a site to look at. I think its a 6-pdr. According to it size and weight. RU in the Charleston Low country? My family has a lot of history there.
My great great? (to many greats) uncle is Francis Marion. My grandfather's family was the vennings. Venning street in mt pleasant is named after them. My grandfathers uncle was the first to open a cash and
carry store in mt pleasant. And my grandfather grew up on the wando river right at the 41 hwy bridge. Bell Isle was also founded by my grandfathers people.
SO.... If you're in the Charleston area shoot me a pm back.

A lot of family history in that area.

Later...
