Any advantage in......

using the 8 inch "donut" concentric coil over the stock 9 X 8" concentric on the Golden umax?----No speculation please.----Would like to hear from those that have actually used both these coils on the Golden & the results/opinions they have on both these coils when used on the Golden.

i thought the signals & tones were a bit sharper & the rolling tone was quite a bit reduced
or so it seemed to me :detecting:

Without a coil cover the 8 inch doughnut coil is lighter and glides across the grass smoother. Its larger receiving antenna makes finding small targets easier. The audio seems snappier to me. I can pinpoint better with it as well. I'm a huge fan of the 8 inch doughnut coil on any Tesoro detector.

I can't answer your direct question, never having a golden. However, switching between those 2 coils on several different detectors that I do have, I would give the 8" donut a very slight edge in depth, abit better pinpointing and it doesn't hang up on brush or weeds as much. The difference in depth was so close that I wouldn't recommend anyone getting rid of the 8X9 spider for that reason. My two bits.

Thanks guys-----Did you find it necessary to have Tesoro recalibrate the Golden when going from the 9 X 8" stock coil to the 8" coil (to get optimum performance out of the detector)?---The reason I'm asking all this is because I'm thinking of picking up a 8" coil also for my Golden.-------Thanks, Del

Del, I haven't noticed any change that would be significant enough to have it re-calibrated, but I haven't done a side by side comparison either.

You are going really like the 8 inch coil if you don't have a need for a coil cover. The coil cover for it is built like a tank and is too heavy.

I am also interested in the 8" Coils for both of my MD's, I have read the 8" is the best all around Coil.

I have an old Tesoro MDI Catalog, that lists the 8" as weighted for use in streams, but see no mention of this on Tesoro's web page or kellyco? Does anyone know if they are still adding weight to the new 8' Coils?

Good question Scanman.------I weighed the 9 X 8" concentric & according to my scales it weighs 16 oz. (with coil cover).----Can someone post the weight of the 8" concentric "donut" coil (either with or without coil cover)?

Del, a doughnut coil without a coil cover is 12.6 ounces. There's a very noticeable difference swinging it over the 9 x 8 inch coil with a cover.

Thanks tab------Man, that's an excellent weight.----I'm going to pick one up (8") & use it without a coil cover.

I've changed coils from time to time an all my Tesoros without sending them in and haven't seen any serious problem. I know that if one were going to use a specific coil all or nearly all the time it might be worth it in order to be sure that the combination is as optimum as possible. Also might be definitely needed if serious chatter or depth problems are encountered. I do get a bit of chatter out of my DeLeon with the 10X12 spider, but never use that combination anyway.
