Answer to the coil weight question that comes up from time to time

Every month or two, the question of how much do the various coils weigh - 1050 coil, Slimline coil & Pro coil.

I had to go to the Post Office today so I tossed them in the truck and weighed them on their scale . . . .

Here are the weights:

- 1050 Coil (Used on the Explorer S, XS & II as well as the Quattro): 1 pound 7.2 ounces
- Slimline Coil (Used on the Explorer SE): 1 pound 5.4 ounces
- Pro Coil (Used on the Explorer SE Pro, E-Trac and Safari): 1 pound 2.5 ounces.

As you can see in the photo, the big difference between the two earlier coils and the Pro coil is the mounting point which really eliminates the "nose heavy" nature of the other coils and while not way different in weight on the scale, it feels way lighter in the field.

If anyone is interested in the weights of some of the other coils, let me know and I can amend this post.

Good Day Andy, Looking at the 3 coils in the picture, it looks like all 3 have a different mounting point centre. It would be good to have chart with all the coil weights and sizes, like the SEF, Coiltek, Sunray, Minelab, and any others. Bob

Being a newbie, this info is invaluable. My new E-Trac is on its way. Will be here where I am next week.

I appreciate everyone offering their tips and tricks of the trade here. Don

Mount the other coils backwards if you are having a problem with the weight? I don't have one to try it with but doing that would also reduce the toe heavy feeling it seems to me.

Andy;

After swinging a Garrett ADS 7 for many years, using the E-Trac feels like I am feather-dusting the furniture. In the few hours I've hunted, I have found a double-handful of old coins including a 1912 barber half and a 1835 Draped half dime in EF60 condition. Thinking about buying another E-Trac for my wife.

Just finished your book and now just waiting for the ground to thaw.

Thanks again for a great resource.

Dan.
I've actually configured the coil on my old XS that way yesterday and it works a treat. First herd about the idea over on the X-Terra forum. Digger mentioned it.
