Here is an answer to a question I had recently submitted to "Ask an Expert" on the BH web page. I basically asked if lead at about the same weight as a Gold nugget, picker, or flake, would make for a good comparison and test or practice piece. In my question, I also asked if BH/First Texas Engineering had any info or test results on roughly what weight or size of Gold nugget an operator of a BH detector may expect to be able to find.
Maybe this will help in understanding your search for Gold nuggets. I've researched my area enough to know it would be a very rare chance of me finding a piece of gold large enough to detect with my 505 but all it takes is finding that one gold nugget those old Miners and the Chinese that heavily worked this place over may have missed.
Robert,
You are correct. A lead bullet and a gold nugget are a good comparison for detection capability.
A lead bullet is, however, larger than most gold nuggets that can be found in surface prospecting in the U.S.
It is very difficult to answer the weight of gold that can be found with the Pioneer505 because so much depends on the conditions of the ground you are hunting in. While it is true that an 8" coil will detect large objects deeper than a 4" coil, most gold in the US is small enough that you should always use a 4" for maximum sensitivity to the smallest nuggets. Gold is valuable because it is so scarce; its scarcity results in most finds being very small pieces.
